Introduction
Graphic Design is about much more than just designing logos. At WLU, we teach students how to engage in design thinking and user experience to create meaningful and effective design solutions. We also encourage a broad range of visual formats and levels of expression including poster design, publication and zine design, packaging, app design, motion graphics, and branding.
Graphic Design is the craft of planning and creating visual content to communicate ideas and messages, and it is professionally specialized to connect users or consumers to brands, ideas, and information through creative visual thinking and storytelling.
The Graphic Design concentration within the Visual Communication degree program focuses on the art of communication using images and typography within a wide range of print and digital applications and settings. It exists at the convergence of business and creativity.
Students begin their studies with a targeted foundation program learning art and design theory in a studio setting. As students advance through the Graphic Design program, they focus on specific areas of interest culminating in a comprehensive Senior Project and Exhibition highlighting their areas of strength within the Graphic Design discipline. Upon graduation, students will have a working portfolio and resume preparing them for application to in-office and remote entry-level graphic design positions.
Throughout the Graphic Design program, students will develop a broad range of skills in visualization, communication, presentation, writing, and technology. These skills provide an excellent foundation for publishing, graphic design, web design, multimedia, arts administration, and specialist careers in the art, design, and digital media.
