Key Summary
About: The Master in Psychology: Work and Organizational Psychology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam trains you as a scientist-practitioner. You’ll explore brain-behavior links, workplace influences on health and evidence-based interventions through coursework, a master’s thesis and an internship. The English-taught track covers occupational health, organizational behavior, assessment, leadership development and research methods.
Career Outcomes: Graduates apply skills in research, human resources, organizational development and employee wellbeing. You could work as an organizational psychologist, HR specialist, occupational health psychologist, talent developer or people-analytics consultant, or pursue a PhD and academic research. Related roles include policy adviser, training designer and assessment specialist roles.
What is the influence of the brain on our behaviour? How is our working environment related to our health? Which psychological interventions are evidence-based?
During the master's programme in Psychology, you will address these types of questions under the guidance of teachers with expertise in the various domains of psychology. You will learn to approach complex problems from an academic perspective. You will also develop practical skills that you will apply in different contexts and with different target groups within your chosen track. There is a strong link with professional practice in the courses as well as in the master’s thesis and internship. In this way, you will be trained as a scientist-practitioner and you will be able to solve practical problems in a scientific way.
The master's programme offers you plenty of opportunities to study what you are interested in—from how you carry out your research and study of clinical psychology in the broadest sense, to genetic predisposition, treatment or healthcare.
There are four different tracks of which one is taught in English:
- Work and Organisational Psychology (English)
- Clinical Developmental Psychology (Dutch)
- Clinical Psychology (Dutch)
- Clinical Neuropsychology (Dutch)

You will look at leadership, the effects of personality in the workplace, power dynamics in teams, selection, assessment, and (strategic) HR you will investigate how to improve organisations.
This track of the master's programme in Psychology takes one year and consists of lectures, seminars, and practical skills sessions. It is an intensive and well-organized programme in which you can choose from a number of specialized courses in which you will learn interactively in small groups. Courses differ in the extent to which they focus on theoretical, methodological, and practical organisational issues, but in all courses the connection between theory and practice will continuously be made.
Most of the teachers have practical experience and are professionals in their field. They are therefore able to provide you with excellent guidance for your career.
irst year
What’s more, this one-year programme prepares you to put what you’ve learned into practice: you’ll gain insights into individual characteristics and social processes that shape organisations. You’ll not only understand the theories behind problems you’ll encounter in the workplace – you’ll also learn to apply these theories to everyday work-related situations. Your courses are all taught by people who have experience both in research and in the field and you’ll get real-life practical experience through your internship.
All this means you’ll have a headstart on the labour market as an organisational psychologist once you’ve graduated. You may find work in HR departments for large companies – including in positions like HR manager, trainer, teacher, selection psychologist or internal management consultant. You could also work for a management consultancy as a coach or external management consultant. Selection firms, educational institutions or research institutions are also potential employers. Plus, work and organisational psychologists are much sought after for general management positions.
This university offers some form of financial aid to prospective students. Please always check the specific requirements and restrictions on scholarship availability.
