Key Summary

About: This NVAO‑accredited joint Master of Science (MSc) in Civil Engineering from Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Université Libre de Bruxelles develops skills in structural analysis, design and materials. It emphasizes material optimization, environmental impact, sustainability and life‑cycle cost. Systems covered include reinforced and prestressed steel or concrete and fiber‑reinforced materials. Specialization in water resources covers rivers, urban water, groundwater and water quality.

Career Outcomes: Graduates work in consulting, large firms, government or start businesses. Career opportunities include structural engineer, geotechnical engineer, environmental engineer, municipal engineer, water resources engineer, consultant, project manager, researcher and entrepreneur; roles are available worldwide and NGOs.

This master's is jointly organized by Vrije Universiteit Brussel in collaboration with Université Libre de Bruxelles, leading to a joint master's degree.

A major objective of our program is to develop an in-depth understanding of the main aspects of analysis and design of all kinds of constructions and to provide a solid knowledge of material technology. An important issue is the optimization of the form of structures and the material selection, with due consideration of their environmental impact, sustainability, and life-cycle cost. Several systems are considered: conventionally reinforced or pre-stressed, either in steel or concrete, as well as those composed of novel materials like fiber-reinforced material systems. You can also wish to specialize in water resources. Courses on different aspects of water resources management (rivers, urban water, groundwater, water quality) are offered in close collaboration with our Master of Water Resources Engineering program.
