Key Summary

About : The PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology focuses on developing computational methods to analyze biological data. The program aims to equip students with advanced skills in programming, data analysis, and mathematical modeling specific to biological problems. Students engage in interdisciplinary research that combines biology, mathematics, and computer science over a typical duration of 3-5 years.
Career Outcomes : Graduates can pursue careers as bioinformatics scientists, computational biologists, or data analysts in academic, governmental, or industry settings. Opportunities exist in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and research institutions, where professionals analyze complex biological data to drive innovations in genetics, drug discovery, and personalized medicine.

Introduction

The Doctoral Study Program (DSP) Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is a combined study program aimed at three areas of education (Informatics; Biology, Ecology, and the Environment; General Medicine and Dentistry). It is a multidisciplinary "doctoral degree" program between two universities. All subjects offered to students of this DSP are a combination of subjects focused on informatics - guaranteed by VŠB-TUO (50%), and subjects focused on biology and medical sciences - guaranteed by Palacky University in Olomouc (30% + 20%). Also, the interuniversity ratio of 50:50 appears to be optimal from the perspective of the offer of subjects, staffing of the program, the profile of the graduate, and the demand for graduates in the labor market.
