Key Summary
About: The Master in Sustainable Futures and Urban Change at West University of Timisoara (UVT) examines development–environment nexus in urban contexts. It covers reproduction of poverty and inequality, environmental degradation and climate change impacts, and politics of sustainability and urban change. The programme uses applied methods, urban policy, planning and research; students can take optional UVT and UNITA courses, fieldwork, internships and volunteering.
Career Outcomes: Graduates enter roles such as Community Development Agent (ESCO 2422.2), Regional Development Policy Coordinator (ESCO 2422.12.14) and Sustainable Development Expert (COR 242232), working in urban planning, environmental policy, climate resilience, NGOs, research, public-sector and consultancy.
Sustainable Futures and Urban Change explores new academic and professional opportunities. We propose new ways of examining critical components in the current politics of international development, with a focus on the reproduction of poverty and inequality. In close connection, we explore the ways in which environmental degradation, especially climate change, affects local communities. The urban environment is a space that encapsulates most of the global problems we face today, from ecological problems, migration and economic inequality, to security and geopolitics. By placing the development-environment nexus in the urban context, this program explores recent developments in the politics of sustainability and urban change.
