Key Summary
About: The Master’s programme Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences at Utrecht University is research-oriented and multidisciplinary. You study molecules tied to health and disease in cells and organisms, from protein folding and cellular dynamics to enzyme engineering and crop improvement. Taught in English in Utrecht, it prepares you for biochemical and biomedical research careers.
Career Outcomes: Graduates mainly pursue PhD positions at Utrecht and universities, including EMBL and ETH Zurich. Enter industry R&D at DSM, Galapagos, Crucell, or work in patent offices and consultancy such as European Patent Office. Roles include research scientist, enzyme engineer, patent examiner and biotech consultant.
Study molecules to understand life
The Master’s programme Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences (MCLS) is research-oriented and takes a multidisciplinary approach to study molecules related to health and disease in cells and organisms. Although thematic research often has a fundamental character, such as the study of protein folding or cellular dynamics, it can also have a more applied character, such as the development of new strategies for crop improvement or the 'development' of enzymes to be used in industry. By the end of the programme, you will be ready to start a career in biochemical, biomedical, and biotechnological research.
You will develop extensive knowledge about cellular processes such as cellular signaling, membrane biogenesis and intracellular transport. You will also learn skills and methods to study the molecules involved in these processes by using biochemistry, structural biology, cell biology, biophysics, computational biology, proteomics and genomics. The programme offers you the flexibility to choose any specialisation within the field of molecular and cellular life sciences.
Academic careers
The programme is focused on research; most of our graduates pursue a research career as a PhD student. Some stay at Utrecht University for their PhD research, while others obtain a position at one of the other universities in the Netherlands. A number of students are doing their PhDs in other countries. We have alumni in the EMBL in Heidelberg and at the ETH in Zurich, but also in Germany, Sweden, Belgium, the USA, and other countries.
Non- academic careers
A small percentage of MCLS graduates begin their careers in the research department of a company such as DSM, Galapagos, or Crucell. Other careers that students pursue include working with the European Patent Office or joining a consultancy company.
Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences (MCLS) is a two-year Master’s programme (120 EC). EC stands for European Credits, where 1 EC equals 28 hours of work
The programme is built around 3 specialized tracks, each focusing on a specific field within Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences. The tracks are organized to help you with choosing courses and the type of research that fits your interests best. You will indicate your preferred track when applying for the programme; however, this preference does not limit your choice of courses and research.
The curriculum then consists of the following six components (with specified credits), covering both practical research training and advanced theoretical education.
