    About : The M.A. International Law and Diplomacy is offered in collaboration between the University for Peace (UPEACE) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). This program focuses on providing students with a comprehensive understanding of international law and the mechanisms of diplomacy. It aims to prepare graduates for work in international organizations, NGOs, and government agencies with relevant knowledge and skills in legal and diplomatic practices.
    Career Outcomes : Graduates can pursue various career paths, including roles as diplomats, international law advisors, and policy analysts. They work in sectors such as government, non-profit organizations, and multinational corporations, significantly contributing to the promotion of global peace and security.

The Master of Arts in International Law and Diplomacy (hybrid and online formats) is a graduate programme permitting students to specialize in the interface between international law and diplomacy. It will not only broaden students’ knowledge in the field of international law and its various foundational dimensions but will also equip them with the knowledge and skills to work in the field of diplomacy and related international careers.

During this programme – offered both in a Hybrid Format (asynchronous classes online and face-to-face on the UPEACE campus in Costa Rica), and an Online Format – students in this programme will analyze the different dimensions of development, including environmental, social, economic, and human dimensions, as well as the theory and practice of diplomacy in the 21st century. These include dispute settlement and conflict resolution. Also available as a certificate program.

Students will also attend skills development sessions and coaching sessions that are designed to support their professional careers and employability. Careers in this field can be very broad, with prospective employers including governments, international organizations, development agencies, academia, and the private sector.

Field Visits

Students admitted to the program are offered a unique opportunity to partake in an optional field visit to Geneva, Switzerland, and/or The Hague, Netherlands, immersing themselves in the heart of diplomacy and international law.

The online programme begins on 7 July 2025, with an application deadline of 30 June 2025.

The hybrid programme begins on 19 August 2025, with an application deadline of 30 April 2025.

Programme Fees

M.A. in International Law and Diplomacy (hybrid format): $13,000.00 USD.

M.A. in International Law and Diplomacy (online format): $11,000.00 USD.

Certificate in International Law and Diplomacy (hybrid format): $3,550 USD.

UN Staff Members are eligible for a 20% waiver and Costa Rican Nationals are eligible for a 30% waiver.
