Key Summary
About: The B.S. in Chemistry, Pre-Medicine/Pre-Pharmacy (Biochemistry) concentration prepares students for medical, veterinary, or pharmacy school and graduate biochemistry study. You’ll follow ASBMB‑recommended coursework and train in modern lab techniques (NMR, IR, laser, biotechnology). Faculty hold doctorates. You can work as a lab or research assistant and pair the degree with UW‑Superior teacher education for secondary chemistry teaching.
Career Outcomes: Graduates enter pharmaceutical manufacturing, clinical research, medical laboratory technology, toxicology, forensic or environmental chemistry, pharmacy, veterinary practice, secondary teaching; many pursue advanced degrees at UW‑Madison and Johns Hopkins. Swenson Scholarship covers full tuition and books for up to four years.
Chemistry majors choosing this concentration are typically those who are interested in attending medical, veterinary or pharmacy schools or graduate school in biochemistry.
Education and skill development in this area are an important part of the preparation for further studies in the fields of Medicine and Pharmacy as well as in preparation for careers or graduate school in Biochemistry and related scientific disciplines.
Students choosing this option will have completed the topics recommended for a biochemistry major by the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Chemistry
Chemistry is often referred to as the “central science” because the chemical processes studied form the foundation for many of the biological and physical phenomena in our world.
As a chemistry major, you'll learn how chemical compounds are studied and used in various applications, such as methods to detect and treat disease, alternative energy, food and agriculture, polymers, paints, cosmetics and much more. You'll also learn how to create and implement experiments while you collaboratively engage with other students and faculty.
As a central science, a chemistry major can prepare you for graduate study or a career in many fields of the life and physical sciences, medicine, engineering and more. Program Outcomes
Did You Know?
- All faculty members have earned doctorate degrees from world-renowned universities.
- Chemistry majors are eligible for a Swenson Scholarship, which covers full tuition and books for up to four years, as well as a number of other scholarships.
- You can work within the department as a lab assistant and with faculty members as a research assistant.
- You will have access to modern lab techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, laser optics and biotechnology instrumentation.
- A severe shortage of secondary education chemistry teachers exists. Coupling a quality education in chemistry, along with UW-Superior's highly regarded teacher education program can prepare you for a career in this important field.
Through a major or minor in chemistry at UW-Superior, you will:
- Understand broad and specific chemistry concepts.
- Be able to apply, analyze and problem-solve.
- Utilize and critique a variety of sources of scientific information for reliability and application.
- Understand, follow, adapt and troubleshoot experimental procedures.
- Create an innovative experiment or project.
- Read and evaluate research papers
The U.S. Department of Labor predicts many new chemistry jobs will be concentrated in pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing companies and in scientific research and development services.Find your niche as a:
- Medical laboratory technologist
- Chemical technician
- Pharmacist or pharmacologist
- Toxicologist - water, synthetic or forensic chemist
- Physician or veterinarian
