Key Summary
Become an expert mechanical engineer who focuses on the futureproof design, analysis, and maintenance of machinery, structures, products, and production processes.
Energy systems, production machinery, airplanes, automobiles, ships, medical devices: many systems and products that are essential to our modern life are in some way a product of mechanical engineering. The field of mechanical engineering is continuously evolving, especially in today’s world, with the rise of the fourth industrial revolution, technological advancements, and a growing urgency for sustainable development. So what does it take to build and optimize renewable energy systems, like wind turbines or heat pumps? What is the potential of smart manufacturing and maintenance technologies, like simulation, 3D printing, or sensor technologies? And how can you make smart material choices for the design of aircraft, machine parts, or medical equipment? These are just a few of the many versatile questions you might deal with in the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Twente.
This two-year, English-taught Master’s focuses on the design, analysis, and maintenance of machinery, structures, products as well as production processes. It covers the breadth of the field of mechanical engineering, addressing subareas like solid and fluid mechanics, materials science, control and robotics, design, manufacturing techniques, tribology, biomechanics, and more. Whichever subarea(s) you will focus on is completely up to you. Thanks to the diversity of specializations that you can choose from, you can develop your expertise in one (or more) of the various subdisciplines within mechanical engineering.

Program Structure
Within the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering (ME), you will build your expertise within one of the seven specializations. In addition, you can tailor your Master’s with elective courses that suit your interests and ambitions. This freedom in customizing your program will help you to become the mechanical engineer you wish to be.
How to compose your Master’s
Step 1: Choose a specialization
Before you start with this Master's, you need to choose a specialization, to build expertise within a specific domain in the field of mechanical engineering. This Master’s has seven specializations:

Step 2: Select electives
Once you have chosen your specialization, it is time to think about what your curriculum should look like. Next to some compulsory courses, which depend on the specialization you choose, you have a great deal of freedom in choosing elective courses. To some extent, you can even choose courses beyond the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering!
Step 3: Find an internship
In your second year, you will do an internship to gain practical experience. There are many options open to you when it comes to choosing your internship. Find out more about internships by choosing a specialization.
Master’s structure
During your Master’s in Mechanical Engineering (ME), you will collect a total of 120 EC within two years.
Below, you can find the general structure of this Master’s. Which exact courses you will follow at what moment, depends on the choices you make as well as the starting date of your Master’s.
Year 1
Specialisation courses
- Each specialization has its own specific set of courses. Of those courses, you need to choose at least six. Choose a specialization first to find out which courses you can choose from.
Elective courses
- Each specialization has considerable elective space in which you can choose specific courses of your interest. To some extent, you can even choose courses beyond the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering.
Year 2
Internship
- In the first quartile, you will do an internship, as preparation for the professional field.
Master’s thesis
- You will finish your Master’s in Mechanical Engineering with your master’s thesis.
Career perspectives
Technological advancements, environmental challenges and a lack of (technical) personnel have pushed the demand for mechanical engineers in the labour market. That is why you can look forward to great career prospects. The majority of graduates of this Master’s has a job soon after graduation. Many of them even get a job offer before graduating, for example by the company they are performing their thesis at.
Job opportunities for Mechanical Engineers
As a mechanical engineer, you can pursue a career in a wide variety of sectors, from the manufacturing, energy, transport, aeronautics, automotive, consumer goods and the maritime industry to the biomedical field. Wherever your interests lie, this Master’s prepares you for a broad range of engineering positions such as manufacturing engineer, product developer, maintenance engineer, materials scientist, system engineer, or process manager, to name a few examples. You might join the R&D department of an industrial company, or you could pursue a career in consultancy or research. You can, for example, also continue with a PhD or EngD programme after graduation, as offered by UT’s Twente Graduate School (TGS).
