Why study here?
The programme, conducted in English, allows you to become a part of a unique community and develop your skills in opera singing under the guidance of the best possible teachers. The degree will give you the artistic competence to perform on stage and understand music from broad and complex perspectives. We give you the chance to cooperate with international partners and build global networks already during your studies.
Content and objective of the program
You will work closely with the Sibelius Academy’s master’s students in opera coaching. You will work on the same productions and grow as artists together.
The Sibelius Academy’s opera training is actively involved in international networks, especially the NordOpera network. The program has close cooperation with the Department of Vocal Music.
You can also choose courses organized by the other two academies of the University and complete so-called joint studies that are available for all students.
Teachers
Our teachers are some of the best experts in their respective fields. In addition to the permanent teaching staff, the program welcomes international top professionals as guests on a regular basis.
Many of our teachers are also renowned performing artists. Over the years, our staff have included e.g. Soile Isokoski, Tom Krause, Karita Mattila, Monica Groop, Jorma Hynninen, Petteri Salomaa, Seppo Ruohonen and Jaakko Ryhänen.
A student who has completed a Master’s degree is expected to have attained skills and knowledge to such a standard as to be competent to undertake demanding solo duties in operatic works; to be aware of the vocal and dramatic demands of an opera role and to have the capability to perform a role as required by the conductor and director; to have improved his/her operatic ensemble skills and his/her ability to rehearse an opera role independently, and to have established a professional profile as an opera singer.
