Our graduate nursing program offers master’s specialty degrees that prepare students for advanced practice, management, and research endeavors to address a changing health care landscape. Both full-time and part-time study options are available, as well as online and classroom-based programs.

Degree Options

Family Nurse Practitioner

The Family Nurse Practitioner Program prepares advanced practice nurses to manage the health care of individuals and their families across the lifespan in a changing health care system. Emphasis is on health promotion and primary care management of the acute and stable chronically ill patient. A family nurse practitioner is provided with a broad preparation for the delivery of health services to individuals, families, and groups in a variety of settings. Graduates are prepared to be recognized as advanced practice nurses by the Texas Board of Nursing and to take the Family Nurse Practitioner National Certification Exams through the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

The Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program (AG ACNP) prepares advanced practice nurses to manage the health of individuals from the age of 18 years through adulthood and through the end of life in a changing health care system. Emphasis is on health restoration, management of complex, acute, and chronic illnesses, and complex health management of late adolescents, adults, and older adults. The scope of practice of the AG ACNP includes managing the needs of individuals who may be physiologically unstable, technologically dependent, and/or vulnerable to the development of complications. Graduates are prepared to be recognized as advanced practice nurses by the Texas Board of Nursing and to take the National Certification Exam as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner

The Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program (AG PCNP) prepares advanced practice nurses as primary care providers to manage the health of individuals from adolescence through adulthood and through the end of life in a changing health care system. Emphasis is on health promotion, illness prevention, the management of minor acute illnesses, and chronic complex health management needs of older adults to maximize their health, functional status, and independence. Graduates are prepared to take the National Certification Exam as an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center or American Association of Nurse Practitioners and are eligible to be licensed as an advanced practice registered nurse by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

The Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program prepares experienced acute care nurses to manage the care of pediatric patients and their family from birth to 21 years of age in a changing health care system. Emphasis is on the management of acute, complex, chronic, and unstable pediatric illnesses. Pediatric acute care nurse practitioners practice within acute care settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, emergency departments, and specialty clinics. Graduates are prepared to be recognized as advanced practice nurses by the Board of Nursing and to take the Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner National Certification Exam offered by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board.

Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner

The Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program prepares advanced practice nurses to manage the care of the patient and their family from birth to 21 years of age in a changing health care system. Emphasis is on health promotion and management of the well, acute, and chronically ill pediatric patient. The pediatric nurse practitioner provides leadership and promotes research in the development of health care services for children in the community. Graduates are prepared to be recognized as advanced practice nurses by their Board of Nursing and to take the Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner National Certification Exams offered by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board.

Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

The Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program prepares experienced acute care nurses to manage the care of pediatric patients and their family from birth to 21 years of age in a changing health care system. Emphasis is on the management of acute, complex, chronic, and unstable pediatric illnesses. Pediatric acute care nurse practitioners practice within acute care settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, emergency departments, and specialty clinics. Graduates are prepared to be recognized as advanced practice nurses by the Board of Nursing and to take the Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner National Certification Exam offered by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board.

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) program prepares experienced neonatal ICU nurses to practice as NNPs in acute care and community settings. Graduates are prepared to take the NNP examination as offered by the National Certification Corporation and to be recognized as advanced practice nurses by the Board of Nursing. Most states (including Texas) require graduates to pass the NNP certification exam prior to applying for licensure. Much NNPs practice in neonatal intensive care units where they manage the care of premature and ill newborns. They often attend high-risk deliveries and may serve as members of transport teams.

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Mental illness is common in society, impacting people socially, occupationally, and otherwise. The trend of mental illness is rising nationally and globally, affecting millions annually. The degree to which services are available is dependent on the presence of highly trained and skilled practitioners in psychiatry. The psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) at UTA is prepared students to function in the role of a mental health practitioner who provides medication management and psychotherapeutic interventions to those with all mental illnesses, including those with serious mental illness and addiction, and within the lifespan populations of children, adults, and the elderly. The PMHNP is also prepared to provide this care in a variety of settings, including in-patient psychiatric institutions, community offices and facilities, and forensic institutions. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center board certification with recognition by the Texas Board of Nursing as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Admission Requirements

The applicant for the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree must meet the general requirements of Graduate Admissions.

Unconditional Admission

Applicants must meet all criteria for unconditional admission.

Probationary Admission

Criteria for probationary admission status and minimum GRE scores are listed in the MSN Graduate Admission table below. When admitted on probation, a student must maintain a 3.0 GPA in the first two semesters of enrollment in the graduate program. Probationary students are admitted for part-time study only.

Provisional Admission

An applicant unable to supply all required documentation prior to the admission deadline but who otherwise appears to meet admission requirements may be granted provisional admission.

Deferred Status

The deferred decision is granted when a file is incomplete or when a denial decision is not appropriate.
