Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in nursing program prepares nurse scientists to improve the health outcomes of culturally diverse and vulnerable populations.
About The Program
A Ph.D. degree opens doors and broadens horizons. There are PhD-prepared nurses who teach at the college level, conduct highly innovative research, evaluate programs, lead health care organizations, author books, and work for government agencies to lead research and help define policies.
Students are required to have each semester’s planned program approved by the graduate advisor prior to registration. A minimum of 45 semester hours is required for the degree.

Campus-Based Program
The Ph.D. in nursing prepares nurse scientists who will integrate knowledge from nursing and related disciplines, which support the development of nursing innovations for diverse populations; design studies for testing nursing innovations for diverse populations; disseminate synthesis of knowledge for guiding nursing care of diverse populations; provide leadership in the policy process for diverse population groups; model values consistent with integrity in science and professional nursing, and collaborate with the nurses and other professionals to effect improvements in health for diverse populations.

Admission Requirements
The applicant for the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.) degree must meet the general requirements of Graduate Admissions and have a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN-PhD entry) or a Master of Science in Nursing degree (MSN-PhD entry) from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or proof of equivalent education at a foreign institution. Applicants must submit to the Office of Graduate Admissions official transcripts from each college or university attended.

Unconditional Admission
Applicants must meet all criteria for unconditional admission.
Probationary Admission
Criteria for probationary admission status are designated in the Ph.D. Program Requirements table below. When on probation, a student must maintain a 3.0 GPA in the first two semesters of enrollment in the graduate program.
Provisional Admission
Applicants who are unable to supply all required documentation prior to the admission deadline but who otherwise appear to meet admission requirements may be admitted provisionally.
Deferred Status
The deferred decision is granted when a file is incomplete or when a denied decision is not appropriate.
Denial of Admission
An applicant will be denied admission if he/she has less than satisfactory performance on a majority of admission criteria listed in the table below. The Ph.D. Admissions Committee will make a recommendation for denial.
