What Will You Learn?

MIS majors receive a comprehensive education in the design, analysis, development, and management of computer-based information systems that support enterprise business processes. They are educated in the fields of management, marketing, economics, accounting, and finance, and learn how to apply the managerial and analytical skills required as evaluators, creating efficiency and value in organizations.

Educational outcomes for graduates include the ability to apply:

• Sound managerial concepts and principles in the development and operation of information systems
• Systems analysis, IS design, and project management concepts
• Technical concepts in information technology

MIS seniors take the Information Systems Analyst Certification Exam during their senior year in a capstone course. Elective course topics offering in-depth study and specialization include business intelligence and analytics, information system security, advanced networking, business process integration using enterprise systems, advanced programming, and operations management. Students have the option to earn additional certifications from SAP, Microsoft, and other corporations. Annually UT offers the SAP Prep Academy, which provides intensive training to prepare individuals to become SAP Certified Business Associates with ERP 6.0.

An MIS minor complements many majors by allowing students to combine their interdisciplinary skills with the rapid changes in computers and information impacting the 21st century. The minor can also be used to prepare for supplemental industry certifications.

International business and MIS majors engage in an in-depth study of MIS concepts coupled with global perspectives, including language proficiency, cultural awareness, and education abroad experience.

Internationally Recognized Program

The Sykes College of Business is accredited by AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), an honor held by only 6 percent of business schools worldwide. It is rated one of the “best business schools” by U.S. News & World Report and since 2007 one of the best business schools in the world by The Princeton Review. UT’s MIS major is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.ABET.org) and is one of only 40 information systems programs nationwide to receive this prestigious distinction.

Practical Experience

UT’s MIS curriculum integrates ongoing changes in the field of information systems and provides students with hands-on experience in a wide array of contemporary computing technologies. Highlights of this innovative program include interactive lectures, individual assignments, and in-depth team projects. Alliances with SAP and Microsoft provide students access to the most current technologies. SAP is the world leader in enterprise applications in terms of software and software-related service revenue.

UT’s Information and Technology Management department is guided by an advisory board comprised of experts in the field of information systems. Members include executives from IBM, PwC, the City of Tampa, and Revenue Management Solutions, among others. They assist faculty in developing programs designed to equip graduates with the critical skills required by employers. Partnerships with information systems professional associations such as the Tampa Bay Technology Leadership Association also facilitate student interaction with the business community. Internships and other projects take advantage of Tampa’s status as a regional center for business and finance, granting students access to institutions such as JPMorgan Chase, Disney World, Moffitt Cancer Center, Port of Tampa, and Raymond James. MIS students are strongly encouraged to participate in one or more internships.

Eight hundred community leaders serve on UT advisory boards, providing students with a world of professional connections. UT students also interact with the business community through in-class consulting projects, field trips, international programs, and UT’s Centers and Institutes, including the Center for Ethics, TECO Energy Center for Leadership, Lowth Entrepreneurship Center, Naimoli Institute for Business Strategy, and Florida Directors’ Institute.

What Can You Do With This Major?

MIS graduates have a combination of strong technical and business skills, including oral and written communication, that bridge the gap that often exists between business users of computer systems and technically trained specialists. This combination of skills prepares graduates to be leaders of the next generation of MIS professionals. It also feeds the demand for MIS professionals who are skilled in both computer technology and business processes. This demand is expected to grow rapidly in the next decade, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Computer and information technology occupations are projected to grow 12 percent by 2024, faster than the average for all other occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. UT works closely with the local chamber of commerce and economic development agencies to help prepare graduates for successful careers.

Graduates are also well prepared to enter graduate degree programs in many business fields. Many MIS graduates continue their education at UT, frequently earning an MBA with a concentration in information systems management. Other recent graduates have attended George Washington University, Duke University, and the University of South Florida, to name only a few.
