This Master of Science in Energy and Sustainability has been designed in partnership with commercial energy specialists to prepare you for a career in the fast-growing energy sector. You'll explore one of today's greatest global challenges: how to provide sustainable energy while addressing climate change.
You'll study the environmental impact of fossil fuels and develop solutions for a low-carbon future. The curriculum covers advanced Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for energy analysis, global perspectives on climate change and energy policy, energy resources and technologies, and waste resource management. Distinctive modules in bioenergy, waste management, and climate change give you in-depth understanding of current industry issues.
Your final four months are dedicated to independent research. You'll complete a significant research project, with opportunities to work with industrial partners ranging from major utility companies to specialist energy consultancies. This real-world experience prepares you for immediate impact in your career. The program also includes a 'Democratisation of Energy' workshop where you'll tackle complex, multi-disciplinary problems alongside peers.
The 12-month full-time course is split into two sections: taught component (September to June) and research component (June to September).
Mandatory first-year modules include Bioenergy, Climate Change Energy and Settlements, and Data Analytics in Civil Environmental and Energy Systems.
You can select one optional module from the related MSc Energy and Sustainability: Energy Environment and Buildings pathway, choosing either Climatic Design of Buildings and Cities or Energy Performance Assessment of Buildings.
The final four months comprise a significant independent research project. Modules are subject to change based on staff availability, research interests, and student demand.
Graduates are qualified for careers in renewable and sustainable energy, energy consultancy, climate policy, and environmental management. You'll have expertise in energy resource assessment, sustainability planning, climate change mitigation, bioenergy systems, and GIS applications.
The professional accreditation supports progression toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status if you also hold an accredited bachelor's degree. You're prepared for roles in utility companies, energy consultancies, government agencies, and environmental organizations.
Your career paths include roles in renewable energy companies, utility and energy supply companies, environmental consultancies, government energy and climate departments, building design and energy efficiency firms, and sustainability organizations.
The program mentions partnerships with large utility companies and small energy consultancies, where you may undertake industrial placements. Roles might include energy analyst, sustainability consultant, climate policy specialist, or energy systems engineer.
You're ideal for this program if you hold a 2:1 degree in engineering, technology, geography, environmental science, transportation engineering, civil engineering, or mathematics.
You're interested in solving real-world energy and climate challenges. You may have some work experience in the energy or environmental sector, though this isn't required. You're motivated by the transition to renewable energy and want practical skills in GIS, energy systems, and climate science. If your background is slightly different but you have relevant professional experience, the university will consider your application on individual merit.
Full-time on-campus delivery over 12 months. Taught component runs September to June at Highfield and Boldrewood campuses. Research component runs June to September. Teaching format includes lectures, module work, group tasks (as part of the Democratisation of Energy workshop), and independent research project. The program is taught in English.
