Key Summary
About: The MA in Creative Writing at The University of Southampton is a one-year programme training you in scriptwriting, creative non-fiction, writing for young people and creative practice. Taught by practicing writers, it centers on the Creative Skills Workshop for instruction, feedback and mentoring. You'll publish in Avenues anthology, join 'Writers in Conversation', take optional arts and sciences modules. The university offers merit and competitive scholarships and career services.
Career Outcomes: You'll be ready for publishing, arts administration, and professional writing in literary publishing, broadcasting, journals, arts organizations, or as a freelancer in fiction, screenwriting, creative non-fiction and children's literature.
This Master of Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Southampton is a stimulating one-year programme designed to prepare you as a professional writer. You'll develop expertise across four key areas of contemporary writing: scriptwriting, creative non-fiction, writing for young people, and broader creative practice.
Taught by practising writers including Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature Toby Litt, four-time novelist Rebecca Smith, and award-winning fiction writer Carole Burns, you'll focus intensively on your own creative writing while studying contemporary work. The programme is built around the Creative Skills Workshop, a supportive space for craft instruction, guided feedback, and individual mentoring. You'll have the opportunity to publish your work in the Avenues anthology alongside fellow students from around the world.
Beyond the classroom, you'll engage with a lively literary community, including the 'Writers in Conversation' reading series featuring major authors, and you can tap into the University's rich resources in theatre, music, art, and sciences through optional modules. On completion, you'll be prepared for careers in publishing, arts administration, and professional writing.
The 12-month full-time programme is structured in three stages. In semesters 1 and 2 (9 months), you study the taught component, including the Creative Skills Workshop, which is the core module.
This two-semester workshop runs weekly and covers mini-lectures on craft, guided group feedback, and individual mentoring. You also choose from optional modules including Digital Life: Myths, Social Media, and Artificial Intelligence; Adventures in Literary Research; Approaches to the Long Eighteenth Century; Communicating the Cultural Industries; Literature, Publishing and New Media; and Narrative Non-Fiction, among others. From the School of Humanities, you can select additional optional modules to personalise your studies
In the final three months (summer), you undertake an independent Creative Project, the culmination of your MA, where you conduct sustained creative writing under supervisor guidance, applying skills and insights from the programme.
On completion, you'll be qualified for careers in publishing and arts administration. You'll have developed professional writing expertise, the ability to give and receive constructive, creative feedback, and the skills to sustain independent writing projects.
You'll be prepared to work as a professional writer in fiction, non-fiction, scriptwriting, or children's literature, or to move into roles in publishing houses, arts organisations, literary agencies, and cultural institutions.
