Key Summary
Are you interested in learning more about genes, molecules, cells, or organisms to develop better medications and treatment methods for various diseases? Do you want to help devise methods that will allow for better monitoring of our health and environment? Perhaps you are also interested in making your ideas a reality and starting your own business or working with research and development within a company. If so, then Bioscience – Molecular Biodesign could be the program for you.
Molecular Biodesign is a form of biological design that has been developed to deal with a structural or functional biological task. The program leads to a broad degree in bioscience, with a focus on molecular biology and biotechnology. It is within these fields that your future employment market can be found. Your theoretical knowledge, combined with the molecular methods and tools you will acquire during the program, can be used in many different areas.
Constituent Courses in the Study Programme
During the first year of the program, you will learn the basics of laboratory work, cell biology, evolution, genetics, chemistry, microbiology, and bioinformatics. You will acquire a broad knowledge of bioscience, and the second year will include advanced studies within molecular biology with a focus on molecular Biodesign, biomarkers, and laboratory work. You will also learn how to use various types of software to support biomolecular design. During the third year, you will study project management and entrepreneurship and will apply your knowledge in a practical molecular biodesign project. The whole of the final semester involves working on an experimental bioscience degree project. Teaching takes place in English.
The study programme is provided by the University of Skövde and is named Molecular Biodesign (Molekylär Biodesign). It comprises 180 credits and is a first-cycle programme. The main field of study is Bioscience.
The education program is based on the Bioscience subject area. The students will learn the basics in of biology, such as cells, ecosystems, evolution, genes, chemical processes and organisms. In addition, the subject is both broadened (entrepreneurship, sustainable development, statistics, scientific methodology) and specialized (bioinformatics, biomarkers, molecular genetics, design and diagnostics).
The program is concluded with a thesis project of 30 credits, during which the acquired knowledge through the study program is used to independently formulate and solve a research- and/or development-related problem within Bioscience.
The studies are mainly pursued as lectures, seminars, elaborations and excursions combined with project work.

Objectives for Bachelor's degree according to the Higher Education Ordinance
- Knowledge and understanding
- Skills and abilities
- Critical judgment and approach
- Local objectives for the study programme at the University of Skövde
After graduating, you can work in laboratory analyses, product development, or applied research within medical biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, food biotechnology, or environmental biotechnology.
Opportunities for further study
After completing your studies, you can continue studying at the second-cycle level in one of our master’s programmes in Infection Biology, Molecular Biotechnology or Biomarkers. You will also be eligible for advanced-level studies at other universities, both in Sweden and internationally. The combination of basic and advanced qualifications provides an excellent basis for research-preparatory studies and research, or product development in both academia and industry.
Opportunities for international studies
During your study period, you can choose to study abroad for a semester at one of our partner universities.
