Graduates who have acquired the necessary scientific knowledge, ethical values and professional competences pertinent to the professions of nursing and midwifery and have further deepened their study of the discipline and specific research, at the end of their training, are able to express advanced nursing, educational and preventive competences in response to the priority health problems of the population and the quality of services.
Graduates with a Master’s Degree in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences are healthcare professionals entrusted with the responsibilities established by Law no. 251 of August 10, 2000, which recognises the accountability of Nurses and Midwives in the management and organisation of nursing and midwifery healthcare services, as well as in teaching activities within the national healthcare system.
The study program is structured over 2 years, divided into 4 semesters, and includes a total of 120 ECTS credits, of which at least 30 must be earned through clinical internship activities. The achievement of learning objectives is pursued through theoretical and practical training, specifically tailored to the profession. Educational activities include core disciplinary subjects, in-depth studies of clinical disciplines, as well as managerial disciplines integrated with legal and economic studies. Significant attention is devoted to students’ statistical and IT preparation through theoretical modules combined with laboratory activities, along with scientific research activities that provide the ability for adequate and autonomous technical-scientific updating and the design of organisational and care models. Particular emphasis is also given to the human sciences and education, as well as ethics and bioethics.
Students are offered an English course (Medical English) aimed at obtaining a B2 certification level. Teaching modules are delivered through lectures, classroom exercises, and laboratory sessions. Learning outcomes are assessed through possible interim tests and a final oral or written examination, unique and simultaneous for each subject, required for the acquisition of educational credits. The learning outcomes of laboratory courses, English, and other activities are assessed through a pass/fail evaluation (idoneità).
Students are also allocated 6 credits for the preparation of the final thesis, an activity defined as the "degree internship," which may also be carried out in non-university institutions, subject to approval by the Teaching Committee.
Graduates holding a Master’s Degree who wish to continue their studies may choose to enrol in Second-Level Master’s programs offered by many Italian universities or in PhD programs offered by various institutions.
Holders of a Master’s Degree in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences can undertake managerial roles in healthcare professions within hospitals, local health authorities, IRCCS (Scientific Institutes for Research, Hospitalisation and Healthcare), private institutions and non-profit organisations, nursing homes, home-care service cooperatives, etc., either as employees or in self-employed practice.
