Key Summary

    About : The Master in History and Philosophy offers students an opportunity to engage deeply with the critical issues in history and philosophy. The program emphasizes analytical skills and encourages exploration of diverse perspectives. Students will complete the course with a comprehensive understanding of both fields, preparing them for further academic research or professional paths.
    Career Outcomes : Graduates can pursue various career paths, including roles in education, archival management, publishing, and cultural heritage organizations. Additionally, the program prepares students for further studies, such as a PhD.

The training course will allow the student to acquire knowledge and the ability to analyse the sources, full mastery of the authors and texts, as well as the most relevant problems and methods of investigation of the different interpretative traditions. In this way, he will be able to orient himself within the epistemological and contemporary hermeneutic debate both in the historical and in the philosophical sphere.

The main purpose of this interclass course is to integrate the historical and philosophical perspectives in the study of social and cultural phenomena, in line with a research and teaching tradition that has characterised the campuses of the University of Siena for more than forty years.

The Master’s Degree in History and Philosophy lasts two years and aims to provide students with advanced training for highly qualified professional activities in the fields of philosophical sciences and historical sciences. This is an interclass degree program, divided into two curricula based in Siena and Arezzo: the Siena curriculum focuses on a training path that unfolds, both chronologically and thematically, from antiquity to the contemporary age; the Arezzo curriculum emphasises contemporary issues and the public use of history.

The program allows students to obtain a Master’s Degree either in LM-78 Philosophical Sciences or LM-84 Historical Sciences. Through this course, graduates will acquire full mastery of the tools and languages of philosophical studies and historical research, based on knowledge of texts, theories, and sources—analysed in both their content and form—and used for the study and analysis of philosophical themes and issues, as well as the reconstruction of historical events.

Among the specific educational objectives of this course are:

  • the use of theoretical models in the fields of philosophical and historical studies;
  • the knowledge of sources, examined in both their content and form, and the ability to use them for the reconstruction, analysis, and study of historical events;
  • the ability to work in the field of analysis and editing of literary and documentary evidence, using both traditional methodologies and digital technologies;
  • the reading and critical analysis of philosophical texts and historical sources, along with their related bibliographies;
  • the preparation of critical studies on themes and issues addressed in the course.
