Key Summary
About: The Master’s in Geological Resources and Hazards uses lectures, labs and field surveys to expand bachelor knowledge in chemistry, physics, math and Earth sciences. It teaches geological mapping, remote sensing, GIS, geostatistics, 3D subsurface modeling, geotechnical surveys, laboratory analyses and seismic microzonation for resource management, hazard mitigation and heritage.
Career Outcomes: Graduates can work as geologists, hydrogeologists, environmental consultants, GIS specialists or geotechnical analysts. Sectors include industry, environment, consultancy and public agencies. Roles cover mapping, studies for environmental assessments, resource exploration and management, geotechnical investigations, modeling and laboratory work. It enables professional registration (Section A) after the State Examination.
The degree course is based on lectures, laboratory and off-site exercises (field surveys), off-site excursions and internships. The didactic excursions, both thematic and interdisciplinary, which are an integral and important part of the geologist's training, take place in various locations in Italy and abroad and are largely covered by course fees.
The educational objectives are achieved through the provision of characterising teaching aimed at broadening scientific and methodological knowledge, which is largely carried out in the first year of the degree course.
Overview
The Master’s Degree Program in Geological Resources and Hazards of the Territory (Class LM-74) aims to expand the scientific and geological training acquired in the bachelor’s degree in the fields of chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, and various sectors of Earth Sciences. Another objective of this program is to provide in-depth technical and professional preparation in the sustainable management of resources and the mitigation of geological hazards.
Lectures and practical exercises within the Master’s Program in Geological Resources and Hazards of the Territory enable students to acquire:
- skills in programming and planning for the collection of surface and subsurface geological data, through geological mapping and sectioning techniques, as well as data processing via remote and proximal sensing, spatial analysis, and geostatistics using GIS and WEB GIS platforms;
- skills in developing surface and subsurface geological models aimed at the exploration and procurement of water, mineral, stone, and energy resources;
- skills in collaborating on the design of works for the management of groundwater resources and mineral and thermal waters;
- advanced analytical skills for georesources, focusing on mineral deposits and industrial geomaterials, through field and laboratory techniques for innovative and sustainable applications;
- skills in programming and managing activities aimed at the study and preservation of architectural and monumental heritage, as well as archaeological and natural sites, using advanced technologies;
- skills in developing geological models for the mitigation of seismic risk (seismic microzonation), slope instability, and hydraulic risk, and for the protection and sustainable use of natural heritage;
- skills in planning and conducting geotechnical investigations, geophysical survey campaigns, geological sections, and 3D models using specialised software platforms;
- technical and scientific expertise for working in geotechnical, geochemical, physical, and geological construction laboratories, supporting drilling, surveying, and excavation activities;
- skills in designing renaturalization interventions for beaches and slopes, and in defending and restoring hydrogeological balance;
- skills in collaborating on the engineering design of consolidation works for unstable slopes affected by landslides;
- skills in designing and developing spatial databases, analysing digital terrain models, photogrammetry, and surveying using topographic-cartographic instruments and equipped drones;
- scientific, professional, and regulatory expertise for territorial management, addressing environmental issues and analysing geo-environmental risks.
Students’ training in the Master’s Degree Program in Geological Resources and Hazards of the Territory is complemented by courses in ecology, anthropology, physical chemistry, environmental chemistry, cultural heritage, coastal protection and management, hydrocarbons, and subsurface fluids.
To further enrich their cultural training, the program also includes cross-disciplinary courses in economic and management engineering, information processing systems, international law, statistics for experimental and technological research, and economic policy.
To ensure students gain advanced preparation for professional practice, the study plan provides for a substantial number of University Educational Credits (CFU) dedicated to curricular internships. These may be carried out (under agreements between the University of Siena and the host institution) in public bodies responsible for territorial management, research institutes, professional firms, companies, and university laboratories, both in Italy and abroad.
Given the high number of credits allocated, the final thesis represents a crucial phase for the in-depth study and verification of the knowledge acquired. It is highly experimental in nature and requires the candidate to demonstrate strong analytical and synthesis skills. Students are therefore encouraged to select their thesis topic by the end of the first year, dedicating at least six months to the preparation and writing of the final dissertation.
Several scholarship options are available, please visit the university website for information.
