Key Summary
This course of study develops on three levels: a theoretical-epistemological one, to understand the complexity of natural and anthropic systems and to investigate their scientific bases; a second, more practical one, to develop environmental monitoring and evaluation techniques and indicators, to study transformation processes, ecosystems, and territorial and economic systems. The third level allows us to gain an overall view, to prefigure economic development scenarios based on what the American ecologist H. Odum calls “a prosperity without growth”.
Characteristics
The Master’s Degree Program in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Sustainability is the result of educational collaboration among research groups that, from different perspectives, address issues related to Human-Nature interactions, both from a “micro” perspective (e.g., production and presence of pollutants) and from the broader, macroscopic perspective of quantitatively assessing sustainability. It provides skills aimed at operating in a global context that increasingly requires this type of expertise.
Educational Objectives
- To provide a solid multidisciplinary education that allows the understanding of the complexity characterising Human-Environment interactions and the dynamics of their relationships.
- To study natural cycles, as well as the principles and methods for evaluating the sustainability level of processes and systems. In this regard, ecotoxicological analyses play a key role, as they focus on the study of the fate of various chemical compounds released into the environment and, more generally, on risk analysis.
- To develop the ability to apply assessment techniques for ecotoxicological impacts and sustainability in real systems.
Several scholarship options are available, please visit the university website for information.
Courses/Training Activities
In the first year, courses focus on investigating environmental interactions from biological, chemical, and geological perspectives, also within the framework of risk analysis, for a total of 60 ECTS credits. The second year begins with a semester in which students may choose subjects to complete their education by selecting courses with an applied focus on sustainability and ecotoxicological impact assessment across different systems and methodologies.
A distinctive feature and ambition of this program is to integrate and complement the two approaches: the analytical approach of ecotoxicology and the more systemic approach of sustainability. The second semester is dedicated to the thesis, as well as opportunities for internships in companies or traineeships abroad.
Internships and Potential International Opportunities
The wide network of relationships maintained by the faculty allows us to offer a broad range of internships, both in Italy and abroad, as well as numerous and interesting opportunities for extra-curricular study in Europe and the Americas. Students may also acquire language skills through the courses offered by the University.
Career and Professional Opportunities
The Master’s Degree in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Sustainability prepares graduates with both theoretical and practical training, enabling them to work in various national and international fields, such as: public and private research institutions; public bodies responsible for environmental quality control and management, biodiversity conservation, and the protection of nature and territory (e.g., Ministry of the Environment, Regional and Provincial Administrations); specialized agencies (e.g., ISPRA, regional and provincial agencies, CPS&Q, ECHA); private companies operating in emissions, effluent, and waste control; professional firms focusing on management, analysis and assessment of environmental impact, risk analysis and assessment, territorial planning; the chemical, pharmaceutical, mining-metallurgical, and steel industries, as well as the energy sector, in roles such as ecotoxicologist or LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) expert.
In line with the growing interest of companies and consumers in environmental issues, this professional profile will become increasingly valuable, both for internal business management and for the communication (marketing) of environmentally sustainable best practices.

Studying Abroad
International students enrolled at the University of Siena can participate in several international exchange programs, such as the Erasmus+ program, which allows our students to study abroad for a semester or one academic year, providing valuable international experience.
Our International programs allow students of the University of Siena to spend a study period (from 2 to 12 months) at one of the other 500 partner universities worldwide.
It is possible to carry out the mobility during each study cycle (bachelor, master of PhD), attend courses and sit exams, prepare thesis work and carry out internship activities. Participants in the International mobility programs will get full recognition for the credits obtained abroad.
In addition to in-presence teaching, which continues to be the preferred method also in the next Academic Year, every single lesson will be simultaneously live-streamed and/or video recorded and uploaded on our digital platform for subsequent viewing. This mode is essential for students who are temporarily unable to be on premises.
