Course Characteristics and Educational Objectives
The program aims to train professionals who operate autonomously and responsibly in the field of care and assistance, global, sexual, and reproductive health, and who safeguard the psycho-physical and social well-being of women, fetuses and newborns, families, and the community.
Graduates in Midwifery are trained in the basic disciplines as well as in the physiology and pathology of the Obstetric, Neonatal, and Gynaecological areas.
The theoretical component is closely interconnected with the clinical internship, whose curricular structure is designed for the progressive acquisition of knowledge, skills, and behaviours, and is based on structured and supervised training. The internship begins with basic nursing/midwifery care to learn fundamental techniques, procedures, evaluations, communication, and planning skills. It then gradually moves toward the development of increasingly complex competencies, involving intellectual and technical-scientific interventions in clinical, relational, educational, and managerial contexts.
This training enables midwives to acquire the competencies necessary for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, protection, and recovery of health in the obstetric, neonatal, gynecological, and onco-gynecological fields, with particular attention to the individuals involved (woman, couple, newborn, child, family, community) across different life contexts and care settings, in line with national and international professional standards.

Courses / Learning Activities
To acquire the necessary general and professional skills, the Bachelor’s Degree in Midwifery requires a total of 180 ECTS credits over three years of study, divided into semesters, with more than 60 ECTS credits earned through internships.
The objectives are achieved through a specific training pathway that includes foundational subjects such as physiology, biochemistry, applied biology, human anatomy, medical genetics, general pathology, microbiology, gynaecology and obstetrics, and anesthesiology.
These are followed by more specialised subjects, including pharmacology, general surgery, radiology, medical oncology, endocrinology, paediatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics.
Cultural education is further enriched by courses in the human, psycho-pedagogical, and sociological sciences, aimed at ensuring the acquisition of behavioural and relational skills necessary to work in complex healthcare environments.
Students are also offered an English course (Medical English), with a focus on understanding scientific literature. Through the University’s language services, they may also obtain certifications such as PET and/or FCE.
To enhance the quality of training, instructional activities have been integrated into the program, along with educational events organised by the University and AOUS, in which student participation is expected.
Internships and possible international opportunities:
Students enrolled in the degree program are encouraged to undertake internship periods abroad, within the Erasmus project, at affiliated healthcare facilities in Europe.

Graduates in Midwifery may pursue a Master’s Degree in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences, offered by the University of Siena. They may also enrol in First-Level Master’s programs, take part in competitions for positions in public and private healthcare facilities, or work as self-employed professionals.

Our International programs allow students of the University of Siena to spend a study period (from 2 to 12 months) at one of the other 500 partner universities worldwide.
It is possible to carry out the mobility during each study cycle (bachelor, master of PhD), attend courses and sit exams, prepare thesis work and carry out internship activities. Participants in the International mobility programs will get full recognition for the credits obtained abroad.
In addition to in-presence teaching, which continues to be the preferred method also in the next Academic Year, every single lesson will be simultaneously live-streamed and/or video recorded and uploaded on our digital platform for subsequent viewing. This mode is essential for students who are temporarily unable to be on premises.
