Key Summary

About: The Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences at The University of Siena is a three-year programme combining lectures, labs, field trips, and internships. You’ll learn math, chemistry, and physics foundations plus biology—animal, plant, and microbial science, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, developmental biology, and bioinformatics. The third year refines professional pathways and can include ERASMUS international study.

Career Outcomes: Graduates can enter research and chemical-biological analysis laboratories, nature protection, environmental and territorial resource management, and public or private companies requiring technical-analytical biological procedures. You may register as a Junior Biologist after the state exam. Key sectors include biomedical, biotechnological, environmental, quality control.

Graduates in Biological Sciences will have access to all the Master's degrees of the LM-6-Biology class and carry out work activities in public and private biomedical, biotechnological, environmental and quality control companies.

The Bachelor’s Degree Program in Biological Sciences provides, through lectures, exercises, laboratory work, field trips, and internships, a solid knowledge of the scientific and methodological foundations of the different sectors that define modern Biology.

Originally established as a five-year degree program in Biology, the course was structured into a common three-year curriculum followed by a two-year specialization in one of three areas: Ecological, Biomolecular, or Health.

In its current structure as a three-year Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences, the program allows students to acquire, during the first two years, basic skills in mathematics, chemistry, and physics, as well as specific competencies in biological fields. These provide solid knowledge of animal, plant, and microbial organisms, their morphology, functions, evolution, and interrelationships within ecosystems. Students also gain molecular-level knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, physiology, bioinformatics, and developmental biology.

The foundational skills acquired will enable students to effectively engage with the areas of study offered in the third year, which more clearly define their professional pathway. This pathway can also be enriched by an international experience through the ERASMUS program.

In addition, the third year includes an internship/training period in university laboratories or affiliated external institutions, aimed at providing practical skills and preparing the final thesis.
