With USF’s general LLM program, you can customize your learning based on your areas of interest and career goals. Choose from USF’s wide range of elective courses and bar exam subjects, including business law, international and comparative law, labor and employment law, public interest, and more. Together with your dedicated academic advisor, craft a curricular plan that fits your needs. USF’s expert faculty will guide and mentor you as you dive into your chosen coursework. In addition to traditional classroom learning, gain practical, hands-on experience through clinics such as the International Human Rights Clinic and Immigration Clinic, as well as through a range of externships.
This program is open to students who hold a JD, LLB, or equivalent first degree in law or students who are qualified to practice law outside the U.S. LLM candidates learn alongside both JD and LLM students, providing them with a broad network and a rich learning environment. This program allows foreign-educated lawyers to take the necessary coursework for the California or New York Bar Exams.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.The program can be completed on a full-time basis with two consecutive full-time semesters of study from August through May, or on a part-time basis with three consecutive semesters starting in August.
Financial Aid
The University of San Francisco School of Law’s LLM Programs award merit based need only. All applicants are automatically reviewed for outstanding academic achievement. Since funds are limited, it is to the scholarship applicant's advantage to submit a complete application with supporting materials as early as possible.

Private loans are generally available for non U.S. citizens, if the student secures a credit-worthy cosigner who is either a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident. U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents needing financial aid may submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 15 for federal aid and scholarship eligibility. Such students may qualify for a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan.. Additional federal aid is available through the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, a credit based loan offered through the federal government. U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents needing additional financial aid information should visit the law school financial aid website.
The LLM Program is a one-year in-person program at the School of Law’s main campus in the center of San Francisco, just 15 minutes from City Hall and 10 minutes to Golden Gate Park. Take advantage of all the city has to offer, including numerous professional events.
