Introduction

Raising a child with behavioural challenges is a long journey, but help is on its way

The Applied Behaviour Analysis Training for Families and Caregivers is suitable for persons who face the day-to-day demands of managing behavioural challenges of individuals of varying ages, with intellectual disabilities, experiencing autism spectrum disorders (ASD), or general behavioural challenges. All courses in this program are based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA).

This introductory level program consists of online and pre-recorded lectures that allow you to work at your own pace. The online facilitator is also available (via email or conference call) to answer your questions, discuss experiences or clarify course materials.

Who should participate?

Each course is based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis and is designed for family members and caregivers of individuals with behavioural challenges and special needs. Parents and Caregivers will be able to contact a trained facilitator to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.

Behaviour 101 - CAIS 9001*
This course provides a foundation for parents and caregivers of children with behavioural disorders or are on the autism spectrum, and is designed for parents with a basic level of understanding about the topic. Focus will be on understanding behaviour, and why behaviour (both good and challenging) happens. This course will prepare parents and caregivers for further training in any of the subsequent courses. Topics discussed will include defining behaviour, understanding why behaviour occurs, and how to measure and track behaviour.

Reducing Challenging Behaviour - CAIS 9002
This introductory level course is designed for parents and caregivers who are finding it difficult to manage their child’s challenging behaviour(s). The course will teach caregivers how to better understand why their child continues to engage in a particular behaviour, and identify general strategies that could be helpful in reducing the frequency of the behaviour.

Teaching New Skills - CAIS 9003
This course is for parents and caregivers whose children are struggling to perform everyday activities and aims to provide them with a better understanding of teaching strategies that could be used, with a general focus on self-care and self-help skills. Information discussed in this course includes how to break skills down into manageable parts for teaching, and how to decide what teaching approach would be best to use depending on the goal and the strengths/needs of the child.

Feeding Difficulties - CAIS 9004
Through this course, caregivers of children who experience challenges related to eating and mealtime routines will better understand these difficulties through individualized observation and reflection. In addition, practical strategies and techniques aimed to help those children who have a limited diet, refuse to eat, refuse to feed themselves or engage in disruptive mealtime behaviours will be discussed, based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis.

Functional Communication Training - CAIS 9005
This course provides parents and caregivers whose children have limited language skills with general strategies that have been proven effective and are based on Applied Behaviour Analysis. These strategies will aim to increase appropriate communication skills and decrease inappropriate behaviors used to communicate their wants and needs.

Toilet Training - CAIS 9006
Parents and caregivers will be provided with a framework to help them better understand the toilet training challenges being experienced by the individual child. In addition, various approaches/techniques related to toilet training will be discussed in detail, along with information about elimination schedules, preparing for toilet training, the use of positive reinforcement and how to handle accidents. There will also be some discussion about common challenges experienced by parents, and possible practical solutions to these.

Sexuality - CAIS 9008
This course explores practical information and advice on issues ranging from puberty and sexual development to guidelines for sex education programs and maintaining sexual boundaries. In the course, participants will explore how effective sex education can help individuals with ASD develop appropriate behaviours that enhance social adaptation and decrease inappropriate sexual encounters.
