Key Summary
The course in brief
The Master's Degree in Specialized Translation is part of the prestigious European Master's in Translation (EMT) 2024-2029 network. This recognition is a quality label awarded by the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission and is synonymous with excellence and quality in the field of translation, recognized internationally.
The CdLM aims to train graduates who have the ability to confidently master the written and oral expression of two of the six foreign languages on offer. It pays particular attention to the creation of skills in specialized translation with an emphasis on specialized languages in various domains and disciplinary lexicons. The focus is also on the world of publishing and professional writing.
The Master's Degree Course includes lectures, practice activities for the languages studied and for translation, and laboratory activities (for the use of information technology and for the acquisition of sector-specific vocabulary).
Among the courses included in the study plan, in addition to those concerning languages, translation, linguistics and humanistic computing, there are courses aimed at developing the competence of the Italian language in a specialist context, courses focused on sectoral languages in different languages and a course dedicated to the areal/geographical dimension of languages.
It is expected that one of the second year exams will be chosen by the student from the courses of the same level offered at the University. In addition to this, always chosen by the student, there are the Other Training Activities that are proposed from year to year to help broaden the panorama of studies and research proposed by the Course.
The Degree Course promotes, supports and enhances the learning of:
- theories and practices of specialized translation;
- high level of skills in translating specialist and professional texts;
- ability to use IT tools preparatory to the areas of study/competence of the Degree Course;
- theories of linguistic methodologies and techniques of linguistic systems analysis;
- descriptive analyses on the stylistic/linguistic level of written and oral texts, in a specialist context.
Graduates of the Course will be able to use their preparation in all those sectors, public and private bodies and institutions where they are needed: specialized translators of sectoral and professional texts in Italian and in at least two of the languages studied; linguistic assistants and consultants for book and newspaper publishing, for services related to multilingualism and multiculturalism, for the drafting, editing, analysis and evaluation of information and communication texts. Graduates will also be able to undertake doctoral studies, for a more complete training in research, in the sectors of foreign languages, specialized translation and linguistics.
