The Department of English in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Macau offers a two-year MA in English Studies that is designed to develop your knowledge of the language and literatures of the English-speaking world.
You will expand your knowledge of English linguistics and literature and develop your skills in reading, writing, speaking and critical analysis.
After the course you will be better equipped for further academic study, or for a professional career in a world where a deep knowledge of English is increasingly a passport to success.
The programme benefits from the presence of staff members who can all draw on international experience of research and teaching.
Features
All students are required to write a project report (6000-8000 words) on a topic of their choice in either Linguistics or Literature. Students will be guided in this project by a supervisor, usually during the second year of study.
In order to welcome more outstanding international students to pursue their studies at UM, the University has established the International Student Scholarship, which provides tuition and accommodation fee waivers for the awardees during their normal period of study (subject to annual continuation).
Students who have studied in an elementary/primary school, high/secondary school or higher institution outside China (i.e. outside mainland China, Macao SAR, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan region) will be prioritised.
International Student Scholarship (admitted in AY26/27 and onward)
Eligibility
International applicants of full-time Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes (excluding executive degree programmes) of UM who meet the following requirements are eligible to apply for the Scholarship.
- valid foreign passport holders; and
- fulfil the admission requirements of the respective degree programme.
Eligibility excludes those admitted through the Joint Admission Examination for Macao's Four Higher Education Institutions.
Bachelor’s Degree Scholarship Package
Full Scholarship:
- 100% waiver of Bachelor’s Degree Programme tuition fee
- 100% waiver of Residential College accommodation fee (shared bedroom)
Half Scholarship:
- 50% waiver of Bachelor’s Degree Programme tuition fee
- 50% waiver of Residential College accommodation fee (shared bedroom)
Master’s Degree Scholarship Package
Type A Scholarship:
- 100% waiver of Master’s Degree Programme tuition fee
- 100% waiver of on-campus accommodation fee (shared bedroom)
- Half teaching assistantship (MOP 4,000/month)
Type B Scholarship:
- 100% waiver of Master’s Degree Programme tuition fee
Type C Scholarship:
- International tuition differential waiver (awardees pay the local student tuition rate)

The Scholarship is granted for the normal period of study, with its continuation from year to year subject to a successful annual review of the awardee’s satisfactory academic performance.

UM PhD Scholarship (for applicants of PhD degree programmes)
UM provides the UM PhD Scholarship to attract excellent students from around the world to pursue their PhD studies at UM. This scholarship is managed by the Graduate School.
- Knowledge and Comprehension: Students will be able to identify the given texts and interpret their content in a written format.
- Application: Students will be able to develop and formulate a practicable research topic.
- Analysis, synthesis, and evaluation: Students should be able to compose a reasoned discussion on their chosen text, supporting their arguments with textual evidence and help from secondary material.
- Appreciation of the symbiotic role played by art, film, and music in relation to literature.
- General enhanced reading and writing skills.
Postgraduate study at the MA level is the gateway to the PhD, which is essential to those seeking to enter the academic profession. A high-level understanding of the English language, and of language and mediation more generally, contributes to success in many administrative and business pursuits.

Important Notes
- Students should choose courses from the Required Elective Course List in Linguistics or the Required Elective Course List in Literature, but are allowed to take up to two courses (6 credits) from any other Master level courses offered by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, with the permission of the programme coordinator. Students concentrating on Linguistics must take ENGL7001, and students concentrating on Literature must take ENGL7024. Students in either area are expected to take the courses on offer in their field of concentration as a priority.
- Not all of these course can be offered in each academic year. The actual list of available REs will be provided to students during the enrolment period.
