Key Summary
The MSc Global Environment and Sustainability programme offers students modules covering pressing global contemporary environmental problems including climate change and environmental hazards, global food systems and health, water and energy resources, waste and pollution and biodiversity, biosecurity and conservation.
How you study
Students will engage with real-world practical examples to examine drivers, concepts, and contested ideas related to environmental problems in diverse global, national and local contexts. Providing students with a holistic and interdisciplinary understanding of the causes and consequences of these urgent environmental issues, these programmes will examine how environmental sustainability policy and management can effectively contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through a substantial independent research project, students will develop in-depth knowledge in a particular specialist area of interest.

- The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) enables access to course materials, resources, and forums to discuss course material and work collaboratively with other students around the world. Module leaders will introduce modules, answer queries and promote discussions during the study year.
- The Online Library(Opens in new window)(Opens in new window) provides access to over 100 million academic electronic items comprising E-books, E-journals, conference proceedings, etc. In addition, you may request items not held in the library via the library's Inter-Library loans service with the British Library.

By studying this programme, students will:
- be able to critically evaluate the complex drivers and consequences of global environmental problems for different societal groups, applying academic concepts and theories.
- develop in-depth knowledge in particular specialist areas of environment and sustainability through designing and executing a substantial independent research project.
- gain critical and creative thinking skills and the ability to apply theory to practice.
- be able to assess the effectiveness, equity and trade-offs of different sustainability goals and policies at global, regional and local levels and over time.
The degree provides career development opportunities for a wide range of individuals, including those with practical experience in environmental management and sustainability who are seeking to further develop their theoretical understandings in these topics, as well as those with more limited knowledge of the subject who wish to develop their understanding and pursue a career in environmental sustainability.
Possible professions include sustainability manager, nature conservation officer, climate policy specialist, or environmental consultant. This degree can also be useful in waste, energy and/or water management and planning roles.

The MSc Global Environment and Sustainability consists of:
- five core modules (30 credits each); and
- one Project module (30 credits)
All of the modules from the MSc Global Environment and Sustainability, excluding the Project module, are available to study on a stand-alone basis, subject to module availability.
Core modules
- Biodiversity, biosecurity and conservation
This module extends students’ knowledge of biodiversity and how it can be protected and conserved effectively and equitably.

- Climate change and environmental hazards
This module develops students’ knowledge about the science and policy related to climate change and the hazards that relate to a changing climate.

- Global food systems and health
This module offers students approaches to examine food systems and health and how these can be managed sustainably.
Can also be studied as an individual module
- Waste and pollution
This module explores the causes and impacts of waste and pollution, examining risks to terrestrial, aquatic and marine environments, humans and other organisms.

- Water and energy resources
This module introduces students to water and energy resources, the main challenges associated with their use, and how they can be managed in a sustainable way.

Project module (MSc only)
- Project module - Global Environment and Sustainability
This module allows students to pursue an area of knowledge in depth, to develop research and data analysis skills and their skills as independent learners.
