Key Summary
This graduate certificate program provides basic management knowledge for practitioners and entry-level managers in the health sector. The focus is on providing students with the knowledge necessary to enter a management position in the Canadian healthcare system. The GCHSM is available for students who wish to increase their knowledge level but may be unable to or are cautious about, committing to a full Master’s degree.
The GCHSM is a cohort-based, part-time program that is offered at the Calgary campus of the University of Lethbridge. The program will be delivered in a compressed, weekend format using a combination of blended learning techniques, distance delivery and residential (face-to-face) sessions. The delivery model allows students to attend school while continuing to work. This is a particularly important feature for students who must maintain practice credentials.
Upon successful completion of the GCHSM, eligible students may apply to have their courses laddered into the Master of Health Services Management program.
International Applicants: Due to the part-time nature of this program, please note that graduates will not be eligible to apply for a post-graduation work permit after completing this program.
This certificate is primarily designed for individuals with an undergraduate degree in health care or management, who are working full-time and would like to move into (or have recently been promoted into) a managerial role.
This program:
- Delivers an essential core of management knowledge for students who are exploring managerial positions, but are unsure about management as a career choice, or are unable to commit to a full Master's degree
- Offers an introduction to key health services management topics that provide essential knowledge that may open opportunities to entry-level managerial positions
- Will assist graduates in their decision-making regarding career options and the pursuit of additional graduate credentials
The development of critical thinking and decision-making skills is embedded in the courses, which begin to prepare graduates to function effectively as managers/administrators in a wide range of public and private healthcare environments.
The GCHSM program consists of 15.0 credit hours of part-time study as outlined below:
Term one
Design Module (3.0 credit hours)
- Health Services Management 5100 – Organization Design (3.0 credit hours), or
- Health Services Management 5120 – Health Services Design (3.0 credit hours)
Term two
- Leading and Bridging Module (3.0 credit hours)
- Health Services Management 5300 – Leading People in Health Services (3.0 credit hours)
Term three
- Financial Structures Module (3.0 credit hours)
- Health Services Management 5200 – Accounting in Health Services (3.0 credit hours)
Term four
- Political Environment Module (3.0 credit hours)
- Health Services Management 5400 – Strategy, Power and Politics (1.5 credit hours), and
- Health Services Management 5420 – The Art of Negotiating Relations and Conflict Management (1.5 credit hours)
Term five
- Conceptualization Module (3.0 credit hours)
- Health Services Management 5500 – Leading Meaningful Change in Health Services (3.0 credit hours)
