Key Summary
About: The Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Lethbridge provides training in public health research methods. You'll learn to design, conduct, analyze, and report epidemiologic studies on outbreaks, infectious and chronic disease, and to analyze surveillance datasets with biostatistics in R. Coursework covers systematic reviews, randomized trials, cohort and case-control studies, and diagnostic test evaluation. Courses may transfer to the Public Health Specialization in Master of Science (Health Sciences) if you enroll.
Career Outcomes: Graduates work in public health and research; roles include epidemiologist, biostatistician, public health analyst, research coordinator, surveillance officer, clinical trials data analyst.
The Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology and Biostatistics provides students with advanced training in public health research methods and analysis. Through the completion of advanced coursework students will have the opportunity to strengthen their ability to design, coordinate, execute, analyze, and report on the findings of epidemiologic studies related to outbreaks and endemic infectious and chronic disease, and analyze large public health surveillance data sets, without completing a Master’s degree.
All students will complete courses that will prepare them to conduct systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, prospective cohort studies, case-control studies, and diagnostic testing studies, and learn how to analyze findings using biostatistical methods and R software.
Coursework may be considered for transfer credit to the Public Health Specialization in the Master of Science degree program with a major in Health Sciences for students who are admitted to that program at a later date.
This program consists of four graduate-level courses. Course descriptions are available in the course catalogue. Please see the dynamic schedule on the Registrar's Office website to see when courses are delivered.
Three required courses:
- PUBH 5003 Advanced Epidemiology
- PUBH 5001 Biostatistics I
- PUBH 5500 Biostatistics II
One elective course: Students can choose a course that furthers their skills in applied research, or apply the skills they have gained in a graduate course on infectious disease outbreaks and control.
- PUBH 5000 Applied Public Health Research Methods
- PUBH 5006 Applied Infectious Disease
The program consists of:
- Coursework
- Derive and apply solutions from research to real-life problems in public health
- Model the factors that contribute to the emergence and spread of infectious disease, and learn how infectious disease can be prevented and controlled
- Understand how social networks, patterns of travel, living conditions, and climate/season interact to influence infectious disease, health behaviour, and chronic disease in rural and urban populations. Learn to write grants and proposals to support public health research
- Design, execute, and manage observational and experimental epidemiologic studies
- Design, execute, and manage systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and other types of knowledge synthesis projects
- Design biostatistical analyses for different types of health studies
- Interpret research findings using biostatistical methods
- Learn to disseminate research findings to decision-makers, industry, and health systems to inform evidence-based practices using accessible, plain language
uLethbridge awards a number of internal and external scholarships, awards and bursaries. We also encourage you to utilize additional resources for award applicants, including other funding databases.
We have an admission award called the Univ. of Lethbridge Graduate Research Award (ULGRA) for which every student admitted to a full-time graduate program is considered. Please note that admission into a program is not a guarantee you’ll receive award funding. This admission award has no application and you will be assessed at the time you apply for admission. You can review the guidelines for ULGRA here.
Additionally, you will be considered for Graduate Assistantships work at the time of admission and your supervisor may be able to offer you a Research Assistantship or stipend (ask your supervisor about that possibility).
The Graduate Awards website lists many upcoming funding opportunities. Each entry provides key information about the funding opportunity, including the application deadline and information on how to apply
