Key Summary
About: This PhD trains researchers and specialists in human factors, ergonomics, occupational safety and occupational health, concentrating on the human role in work processes, workplace safety and work environment risk management. You'll gain internationally comparable PhD credentials and research skills in safety science, systems analysis, ergonomics, labor protection and advanced methodologies.
Career Outcomes: Graduates can work as leading-level specialists, consultants, university researchers and teaching staff. They can found safety consultancies or join industry and government in roles such as safety manager, ergonomist, occupational health specialist, risk assessor, compliance officer or policy advisor across manufacturing, healthcare, transport, academia and public administration.
This program aims to prepare doctors of science, highly qualified researchers and specialists with appropriate knowledge, skills and competences about the importance of the human factor in work processes, safety at work and occupational health, as well as to obtain internationally comparable competence and an internationally comparable Ph.D. degree.
- EUR 700 per month - citizens from these countries are eligible to apply for a Latvian state scholarship.
- Temporary students’ residence permit holders can work 40 hours per week.
The content of the study program involves the scientific research, knowledge creation and transfer, approval work and specialization courses and consists of the following modules:
- Science module – 95 creditpoints in total;
- Specialization module – 25 creditpoints in total.

UL full-time students, regardless of their citizenship, have the opportunity to apply for the ERASMUS + exchange program for studies or/and traineeship.
After the successful completion of the study program and the awarding of the doctoral scientific degree (Ph.D.), graduates are ready to work in any sector of the economy both as leading-level specialists and as consultants, create their own company and work at universities and higher education institutions as teaching staff and researchers in the field of human factors, safety at work, occupational health, occupational health, work environment risk management, labor protection, labor relations and management.
