Key Summary

About: The University of Johannesburg BEng/BEngTech (Electrical Engineering) builds the knowledge and skills for a practicing Electrical Engineering Technologist. It follows DHET, CHE and ECSA guidance with a three-year CDIO-based curriculum and provides the educational base for registration as a Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA. Graduates can enter NQF level 8 honours and Master’s programmes. UJ offers student experience, sports, international partnerships and research support.

Career Outcomes: Graduates can work as electrical engineering technologists, power systems technicians, instrumentation and control technologists, maintenance or design engineers, renewable energy technicians, safety officers, consultants, and obtain professional registration, Master’s study or research roles.

The purpose of the BEngTech (Electrical Engineering) is to build the necessary knowledge, understanding, abilities, and skills required for further learning towards becoming a competent practicing Electrical Engineering Technologist. Specifically, the qualification provides graduates with:

  • Preparation for careers in engineering itself and areas that potentially benefit from engineering skills, for achieving technological proficiency and making a contribution to the economy and national development;
  • The educational base required for registration as a Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA.
  • For graduates with an appropriate level of achievement, the ability to enter NQF level 8 (Honors) programs and then proceed to Master’s degrees.
  • For certificated engineers, the education base for achieving proficiency in electrical engineering and occupational health and safety.

University of Johannesburg’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment – The First in South Africa to Roll Out the Widest and Comprehensive Range of BEngTech Degrees.

In line with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Council of Higher Education’s (CHE) new Higher Education Quality Sub-Framework (HEQSF), and Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) guidance, the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) at University of Johannesburg has rolled out its approved three-year BEngTech and Built Environment Bachelors qualifications. These new programs are developed to further our approach to Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) – the University of Johannesburg is a member of the CDIO consortia.

Consequently, most of FEBE’s National Diploma and BTech programs will be gradually phased out. The last intake of the three years National Diploma occurred in January 2016. We urge National Diploma graduates/alumnus who has not registered or completed their BTech, to register and complete their degrees as soon as possible.
