The Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Historical Analysis of the Contemporary World is intended to prepare you for research and specialisation, allowing you to continue your education in an autonomous, critical manner, acquire research skills and conduct original historiographic research.
It brings together teaching staff from seven university departments in Andalusia, who are experts in Contemporary History and related areas (Historiographic Sciences and Techniques; Modern History; American History; Economic and Sociological History) and five teachers from the University of Bourgogne (France), Carlos III University of Madrid (Spain), University of Costa Rica (Costa Rica), University of Girona (Spain) and University of Pittsburgh (USA) (experts in Sociology; History of Political Thought; Contemporary History; Economics, Ethics and Social Sciences; and Comparative Social History), who are linked to the programme via the International University of Andalusia. The aim is to respond to students’ interest in a postgraduate programme that allows them to specialise in a chronological period that begins in the late 18th century and continues through to the present, exploring complex social, political, economic and ideological issues that affect us to this day.
You will also be able to take advantage of the University of Jaén’s unique cross-disciplinary training programme and the range of activities offered in connection with this master’s programme to improve your personal development and professional prospects.
The master’s programme is designed to allow students with training in the following fields to be admitted automatically:
- a) History, as a first preference: Bachelor’s Degree in History; Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and History; Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and Literature (History or Geography and History specialisation).
- b) Humanities and Social Sciences: Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities; Bachelor’s Degree in Political Sciences; Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology; Bachelor’s Degree in Geography; Bachelor’s Degree in Law; Bachelor’s Degree in Economic Sciences; Bachelor’s Degree in Labour Sciences; Bachelor’s Degree in Communication (Information Sciences).
Students with equivalent or related qualifications from member states of the European Higher Education Area will also be automatically admitted.
Nb. Other foreign qualifications must be accompanied by valid accreditation by the issuing university of their status in permitting access to postgraduate study in the country of origin, translated into Spanish, English or French.

Main objectives
The objectives of the Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Historical Analysis of the Contemporary World are:
- To prepare you for research and specialisation and respond to students’ interest in a postgraduate programme that allows them to specialise in a chronological period that begins in the late 18th century and continues through to the present, exploring complex social, political, economic and ideological issues that affect us to this day.
- To offer you a curriculum that is innovative in terms of its content and focus, as well as the use of the virtual learning format that is such an important tool in overcoming the difficulties caused by international mobility among Humanities students.
The master’s programme will equip you with skills to boost your employability and expand your professional horizons. To this end, we work individually and in groups, giving you the opportunity to discover different approaches and competencies involved in searching for employment. On an individual basis, we aim to help you enhance your self-awareness, improve your positioning within the labour market and define your vocational orientation and occupational profile. In groups, we will discuss topics such as drafting a CV, following up on work placements, scholarship programmes abroad and individual and group interviews. Through this approach, you will acquire a strong knowledge of emerging trends in the labour market and of what you have to offer as a candidate. You will also be able to conduct a planned, organised, effective search for employment using the available tools and resources to boost your employability.
