Key Summary

About: The LLM in Global Criminal Law at The University of Groningen trains you to apply substantive and procedural criminal law globally. The programme covers organised, transnational and international crime and lets you specialise in financial, cyber and international crimes. Teaching staff also do research across faculty programmes and Centres of Expertise, so you'll learn current legal scholarship and comparative international criminal law.

Career Outcomes: You'll be prepared for work in prosecution, defence, compliance, cybercrime units, NGOs, international organisations and academia.

Career opportunities: prosecution, defence, policy advisor, compliance officer, financial-crime investigator, cybercrime analyst, NGO or international organisation roles, legal researcher.

Our LLM in Global Criminal Law equips you to understand and apply criminal law – both substantive and procedural – in today's globalised world.

The program addresses pressing forms of criminality, including organised, transnational, and international crime. What makes this program unique is its two-fold focus:

  • You will gain in-depth knowledge of substantive and procedural criminal law from a comparative and international perspective.
  • You will specialise in specific areas of criminal behaviour such as organised and financial crime, cybercrime, and international crimes.

This is more than a degree – it is a gateway to a meaningful international career in law, policy, or practice.

Research

The Faculty of Law conducts research in many fields of law.

Almost all teaching staff have an appointment to both teach and do research. The Faculty's research is organised into several research programmes. In addition to this, the Faculty houses several Centres of Expertise.

All Faculty researchers are linked to or more of these programmes and/or centers and as a result, students will always hear the latest information with regard to academic research done in the area of their LLM.
