About this programme
This unique programme will be the foundation and optimum training platform from which to start a rewarding career in the maritime industry.
The academic and technical qualifications included in this degree complement each other and open up careers ashore or at sea.
- Shore side: Achieving the Officer of the Watch (OOW) qualification provides graduates with a better understanding of shipping operations, offering a benefit to potential employers.
- At sea: A BSc (Hons) qualification will grant graduates advantages for promotions as the academic content covered in the programmes is up to management level.
Achieving the technical and academic qualifications will maximise your opportunities in the maritime industry, allowing you to change career paths at any time.
A key feature of this programme is the option to choose a Nautical or Engineering pathway.

Curriculum
Choose your Cadetship pathway
Students can choose their cadetship speciality route up to the end of Semester 1 of the first year. This gives students the opportunity to understand each route and decide their preferred option after completing joint modules from both routes in the first semester.
Deck Cadetship
- On completion of the Deck Cadetship, students will become qualified Deck Officers and awarded a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW’95 II/I OOW).
- In simple terms, a Deck Officer working onboard a typical ship will be on scheduled watchkeeping duties on the bridge at sea, involved in navigation, planned maintenance and cargo operations.
- A Deck Officers’ responsibilities when on Duty often include passage planning, ensuring safe navigation, stability, communications, managing cargo operations and planned maintenance of the hull and deck equipment.
Engine Cadetship
- On completion of the Engine Cadetship, students will become qualified and awarded a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Engineering Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW ’95 III/1 OOW).
- In simple terms, an Engineering Officer working onboard a typical ship will be on scheduled watchkeeping duties in the Engine Control Room managing the ships’ engine room.
- A Marine Engineering Officer is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the ship’s main propulsion machinery, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, sewage systems, refrigeration systems, ventilation systems and all of the electrical facilities.

A unique feature of this programme is that engineering and nautical students can work together through the programme’s joint modules. Typical joint modules include:

Students are able to opt not to complete the final dissertation and /or the cadetship and exit with either a BSc (Ordinary) degree or a BSc (Hons) degree at an earlier stage in their final year of their studies. Speak to a member of our team to find out more.
Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) Approval
The University of Gibraltar’s cadet programme has obtained Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) Approval with a reduced sea time of 12 months.
Our BSc (Hons) Maritime Science with cadetship programmes have obtained MCA approval. This means that the qualification BSc Maritime Science has been approved as meeting the requirements of the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code (II/1 and II/2 – Deck and III/1 and III/2 – Engineering).
In addition, the University of Gibraltar has also been approved as an Examination Centre for MCA Safety (Deck) and Professional Exams Engineering, which are currently administered by the Scottish Quality Authority (SQA) and International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI).

Graduates may, for example, choose to work in the Merchant Navy; on a research ship; a cruise ship or a super-yacht. Our BSc (Hons) Maritime Science programme is aligned to Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) standards.
