Key Summary

About : The Doctorate in Economics (Ph.D.) program offers a comprehensive academic experience, focusing on advanced economic theory and quantitative analysis. Students engage in rigorous research and coursework, preparing them for significant contributions to the field. This program centers on critical thinking, empirical methods, and the application of economic principles in real-world scenarios.
Career Outcomes : Graduates may pursue various career paths, including roles as economists, policy analysts, or academic researchers. You might find opportunities in government agencies, think tanks, international organizations, and universities, where you can apply your expertise in economic research and analysis.

The goal of the Ph.D. Program in Economics is to provide training to individuals to become high-quality researchers in line with international standards. Our aim is for our graduates to be able to successfully compete for employment at Universities, research institutions, public policy organizations, and the private sector. In addition to this, it aims to create a dynamic research community at the University of Cyprus that will also raise the level of economic research in Cyprus and infuse public debate on economic policy with scientific methods and rigorous analysis.

The Department of Economics provides a strong research-oriented academic environment, with faculty members with research interests spanning across various fields in Economics and Econometrics. Tilburg University Research Ranking, which measures research output in Economics journals, has been ranking the University of Cyprus consistently within the top 100 institutions in Europe, and around the world’s top 200.

Past graduates of the program are now employed in renowned Universities abroad, such as the University of Essex, University of Glasgow, Nottingham Business School in China, and University of Innsbruck, as well as in several academic institutions in Cyprus.

The program begins with the coursework stage. The students take core courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics, as well as a course in Mathematics, two courses in Topics in Current Economic Research, and additional elective courses that help them deepen their knowledge in specific research areas. Students with sufficiently high performance in the core courses obtain the right to take the comprehensive exam. Success in the comprehensive exam gives the student the right to proceed to the program’s research stage. During the research stage, the student conducts research under a Research Advisor’s guidance, intending to write a doctoral dissertation (for more details see the section Rules of Study).

The minimum duration of the program for a student who has to follow the complete coursework stage is four years. However, the typical duration for most students is five years.
