Key Summary

About: The MSc in Physics at The University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" is an English taught 2-year programme. Entry requires a bachelor in physics or related field with strong physics and math. Year one consolidates fundamentals; year two centres on a thesis with specialisations across theoretical and experimental topics including quantum computing and environmental physics. ERASMUS+ mobility is available. The Teaching Board pursues study grants for exceptional students.

Career Outcomes: Graduates gain experimental, theoretical and numerical skills for roles as research scientist, PhD candidate, experimental physicist, computational physicist, data scientist and R&D engineer in academia, research institutes and industry worldwide.

The Master of Science (MSc) Programme in Physics at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” offers the opportunity to very able graduates to deepen their knowledge of physics. The course, entirely delivered in English, is strongly connected to the research activities performed at the Department of Mathematics and Physics.

For admission, bachelor degree in physics or related field (mathematics, chemistry or engineering disciplines,..) is required, provided that students have a sufficiently strong physics and mathematics background.

The first year of the program is dedicated to consolidating fundamental knowledge in physics while exploring various areas of modern physics in depth. In the second year, the focus shifts predominantly to the master's thesis, allowing students to specialize in one of the several fields of advanced physics research. These fields encompass a broad range, from sub-nuclear physics to complex systems physics, including optics, environmental physics, and their applications in diverse disciplines such as biomedical science, aerospace, climatology, cultural heritage, and quantum computing.

To enhance the program's objectives, the MSc Teaching Board has established inter-institutional agreements with several European universities, such as the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun (PL), and the University of Lisbon (PT). This provides students with the opportunity to study abroad, preferably during the third semester, at one of the partner universities in Europe.

At the conclusion of the Programme, MSc graduates will possess a comprehensive and robust understanding of modern physics, encompassing theoretical and experimental aspects. They will gain skills to manage complex experimental setups and become familiar with the latest technologies. Alternatively, they will develop proficiency in working with physical models, in conjunction with mathematical and numerical tools, to effectively describe a broad range of physical and interdisciplinary phenomena.

The MSc Teaching Board actively pursues study grants to provide financial support to exceptionally deserving students.

Partner Institutions

The International MSc Programme in Physics is aimed to contribute to the creation of a European education area, fully in line with the initiatives of the European Commission. In fact, the enrolled students are encouraged to spend a period of study (preferably in the first semester of the second year) in Europe.

To this end, interinstitutional agreements within the ERASMUS+ Programme have been established with:

  • Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun
  • Universidade de Lisboa
  • Istituto Nazionale di AstroFisica
  • CNR-SPIN

Study periods outside Italy may be extended, if necessary, up to a maximum of 12 months.

 Other Institutions contributing to the MSc Programme are:

  • INFN, National Institute for Nuclear Physics, Unit of Naples;
  • INO-CNR, National Institute of Optics - National Research Council, Unit of Naples;
  • CIRA, Italian Centre for Aerospace Research, Capua;
  • CMCC, Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici.
