The program is designed for individuals with prior software development experience and a basic understanding of JavaScript frameworks, web servers, and Python or Java. Students develop advanced skills in Python or Java programming, Linux systems architecture, server-client integrations and APIs, web development frameworks, software security, performance tuning, unit and integration testing, version control, DevOps, CI/CD, and cloud deployment using platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. The curriculum also covers the application of AI solutions with attention to performance, scalability, security, and ethical implications. Students complete a capstone project focused on application development in real-world contexts, applying project management, collaborative and team-based coding, SDLC, agile development, software security, and other contemporary methodologies.
Students complete five courses totaling 10 semester units: one Programming course, the required Back-end Development course, the required Security course, one elective, and the required capstone course. The Programming choice is Java: Discovering Its Power or Mastering Python. Electives include Software Quality Assurance, Software Design Patterns, Artificial Intelligence Foundations, and Advanced Databases. Completing the courses in the listed order is highly recommended. The curriculum can be completed in as little as one year and all coursework must be completed within three years.
The program is intended to help developers and engineers advance their technology careers. The capstone project provides an opportunity to demonstrate skills and prepare for a subsequent career move, while creating a professional portfolio and strengthening a résumé.
