The Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program at the University of Belize, offered through the School of Medicine, is a rigorous and structured five-year professional degree designed to train future physicians to serve both local and global healthcare needs.
The program follows an integrated curriculum that progresses from basic biomedical sciences in the early years to clinical and community-based training in the later stages. The first two years focus on core foundational subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Epidemiology, and Medical Ethics, providing students with a solid scientific base.
By Year 3, students transition into clinical sciences and applied medicine, engaging in subjects like Pathophysiology, Forensic Medicine, and Healthcare Management, while gaining exposure to hospital settings. The final two years emphasize clinical rotations across key specialties, including Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, and Community Health, ensuring well-rounded practical training.
Throughout the program, students must pass comprehensive exams at the end of each academic year with a minimum score of 75%, culminating in the MBBS Comprehensive Exam in the final year. The program requires the successful completion of approximately 176 credit hours, combining lectures, labs, seminars, and extensive clinical practice.
Graduates are equipped to pursue medical licensure, postgraduate studies, and service in a wide range of healthcare environments.
The Preclinical sciences curriculum provides the essential knowledge base upon which all medical practice is built. It is structured to cover the fundamental aspects of human biology, disease mechanisms, and medical sciences.
