At UCR, we offer a three-year bachelor’s in liberal arts & sciences. Each year is split into two semesters. In each semester, you take four courses; that’s 24 in total that are up to you.
Your first year is about two things, exploring your interests and building the skills you need. You’ll kickstart your skills-building with the only mandatory course: Personal & Professional Development (PPD). PPD helps you transition from high school to university life, while developing essential skills for both in and outside the classroom. Next to that, you can choose any introductory course (or 100-level) from the get-go. Some of the more advanced courses (200-or 300-levels) are locked behind what we call gateway courses. These gateways build the skills you need to succeed in the higher levels.
Dive deeper from your second year onwards. You’ll choose core courses to develop expertise and keep future master’s programs in sight. And responsive courses? They evolve with the world—and with you. Many courses you’ll be taking include Community Engaged Learning, where you’ll work with local partners, apply your knowledge, and learn from real-world challenges. Because knowledge sticks best when you use it.
You’ll also take a research-intensive 300-level course, where you conduct research on your own or with others. Throughout your studies, you’ll track your progress through a digital Portfolio.
Exchange? Internship? Absolutely. This program is flexible by design—because learning is never one-size-fits-all.

If you do all that, you’ll graduate with either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. You can even have a major listed on your diploma if you have taken enough courses in one of our clusters. We have six:

Combine clusters, focus on one, you choose. But here’s the real point: every path is valid. This program is built around you.
Within the clusters, courses are offered at three different levels:
- 100-level (introductory): These courses have no prerequisites and are open to all students.
- 200-level (intermediate): These courses are only open to students who have successfully completed the gateway course associated with that unit.
- 300-level (advanced): These courses are only open to students who have successfully completed the gateway course associated with that unit. Some advanced courses are labeled as research-intensive and you will need to complete at least one of those.
Courses don’t just come in levels, they are also come in different types. At the introductory level only, you will find gateway courses; these courses teach you essential skills that you will need in intermediate and advanced courses in the unit. It’s possible for one gateway course to provide access to the intermediate and advanced courses in more than one unit.
