What will I learn?
As a nurse, you never know what each shift will bring—which is why our program is designed to prepare you for anything, with a broad education in clinical nursing. You’ll likely start with science-based coursework in chemistry and anatomy, then move on to upper-level classes that focus on specific diseases throughout a patient’s lifespan. You’ll work on lifelike patient simulators that prepare you to handle emergencies and gain confidence through hours of real-world practice in clinical settings. The concept-based curriculum prepares you to take lessons from the classroom and apply them in different settings, for patients at various stages of wellness or illness. Students are qualified to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam after graduation.
What can I do outside of class?
Put your skills to work as you gain invaluable experience. As a nursing student, you’ll have opportunities for:
- Service learning: Our students have cared for underserved populations in Buffalo and throughout the U.S., at mobile medical centers in impoverished areas and disaster relief efforts.
- Global opportunities: Trips have included helping patients (and gaining a global perspective) in Haiti, Ghana, and many other countries.
- Clinical experience: You’ll have opportunities to do rotations at a Level 1 Trauma Center, a world-renowned cancer center, or other clinical sites.
- Student groups: Build lifelong friendships and professional connections.
- Research: Help advance our knowledge in areas such as LGBTQ health, sleep apnea, oncology, and many more.
Around the world, you’ll find UB nursing grads doing what they love. Our alumni take care of patients in nearly every specialty, serve in senior leadership positions for healthcare networks, and research ways to improve patient care. (One of our most well-known graduates was the director of the United States Navy Nurse Corps.)
Whether you’re interested in direct patient care, case management, administration, research, pharmaceutical sales, or teaching, a bachelor’s degree in nursing is quickly becoming the recognized standard. Nurses who have a bachelor’s degree provide a higher quality of care, have more opportunities to advance, and make more money, according to research and data.
