This program equips students with knowledge about animal welfare, research ethics, and compliance related to laboratory practices. Students can expect in-depth studies covering species-specific care and handling, husbandry practices, and veterinary care for research animals.
Career Outcomes : Graduates can pursue various careers, including roles as clinical research associates, laboratory animal caretakers, or veterinary technicians. They may also advance into regulatory affairs, animal facility management, or academia, working in research institutes, universities, and pharmaceutical companies.

Taught by the Higher Technical School of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering (ETSIAMN), this degree will offer 25 places.

This master's degree guarantees the acquisition of skills in accordance with current legal regulations, principles of ethics in experimentation, animal handling methods, pain and stress minimization techniques, anesthesia and euthanasia procedures, as well as the importance of experimental design that reduces the number of animals used and maximizes the collection of reliable and reproducible data. The objective is to promote responsibility and respect for animal welfare, and to ensure that research is conducted in an ethical, efficient, and scientifically valid manner.

Pre-registration for this degree is open until May 2, 2025.

Title description

MUCAL offers comprehensive training in the management of experiments involving the use of animals, both in the laboratory and for other scientific purposes, as well as in the management of the resulting data to generate knowledge, enabling students to develop their careers in research centers, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and other companies in the scientific sector.

Students will acquire the necessary theoretical and practical skills and competencies through an ethical and rigorous approach, complying with best practices and current legislation. They will also gain fundamental knowledge of animal testing, as well as data management, analysis, and processing—essential aspects for developing research that contributes to knowledge generation and applying it in professional settings, such as research centers, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries , and other companies in the scientific sector.

The MUCAL offers more than 200 hours of practical content, including 140 hours of supervised work on research projects.

To guarantee the quality of our classes, we have limited seats to 25 students . Register now and be part of the first edition of MUCAL.

Objectives of the title

  • The goal of the master's degree is to train researchers and qualified personnel to work with animals for scientific purposes, providing comprehensive training in all aspects related to animals, both in the laboratory and for other scientific purposes.
  • This encompasses both the design and execution of animal experiments and the collection and management of resulting data. It also includes the use of alternative methods using in silico models and the processing of big data, with the aim of minimizing, or even eliminating, the need to use animals for scientific purposes in the future.
  • The master's degree promotes a strong commitment to responsibility and respect for animals, prioritizing their health and well-being and ensuring that research is carried out ethically, efficiently, and with scientific rigor.
  • The goal is to provide professionals with the necessary skills so that their work contributes to scientific advancement, while always maintaining a high standard of care and consideration for animal life.
  • Finally, the objective is for students to reach the training levels equivalent to functions a), b), c), d) and e) included in Royal Decree 53/2013 and Ministerial Order ECC/566/2015 of 03/20/2015.
