Key Summary
Given the educational challenges involved in building new projects for peaceful coexistence in the context of the global crisis, education in values and citizenship is increasingly important if we are to learn to live together in multicultural, interlinked global societies.
The financial crisis has raised questions about social cohesion and the fundamental values of citizenship in democratic societies. Globalization and social networks also pose new challenges for the shaping of identities, as digital identity now coexists with personal and social identities more deeply rooted in places and cultures.
Whether our focus is microscopic, detecting widespread concern over a crisis of values, or we take a more macroscopic view, we are addressing an age-old issue in the history of human interaction that calls for urgent attention through social and educational research and through the efforts of education professionals. The increasing complexity and diversity of contemporary society requires a social model of integration that can ensure the prevalence of a shared public culture founded on pluralism, as the cornerstone of a social, political and cultural project that acknowledges difference.
This master's degree therefore aims to meet the challenges of today's society by providing students with the tools to shape progress towards universal social responsibility.
The course is open to holders of official bachelor's degrees, equivalent undergraduate degrees and diplomas in disciplines related to social and educational work (social education, social work, education, teacher training, educational psychology, sociology, psychology and anthropology). Holders of other degrees are also welcome to apply, provided that they have a specific interest in the course content and some academic and/or professional training in the areas covered by the programme.
In this program, students will:
- Acquire a theoretical and practical perspective on values education and the practice of citizenship in multicultural societies, and learn how to incorporate this educational task into relevant professional areas: formal, informal and non-formal education; administration; the service sector; the media, and foundations and bodies that operate programs in areas related to the scientific field in this master's degree.
- Learn to plan, design, apply and evaluate projects in citizenship and values education appropriate to various areas of intervention: regional educational projects; educational plans at the local level; programs of social inclusion and attention for immigrants; evaluation of audiovisual programs and games aimed at young children and adolescents; preparation of school texts and materials in a variety of media; programs to promote civic-mindedness, health, environmental education and education on consumption.
- Learn to identify social needs, the theoretical perspectives and methodological tools required for research, and to apply and transfer the results, which is a particularly significant objective for students interested in pursuing research.
