Introduction
The Master's Degree in Gerontology is focused as a highly useful postgraduate degree for all university students heading towards the field of gerontology, both clinical and social, being especially relevant for Health Sciences careers (medicine, nursing, occupational therapy , speech therapy, clinical psychology...) and Social Sciences (social work, labor relations, social psychology, psychopedagogy, sociology...), both from a professional and an academic and research point of view through the completion of doctoral theses by graduates. The Master's Degree is considered as a specialized and multidisciplinary training title, endorsed by the level of the teachers involved, mostly doctors, and from different fields of social and health care for the elderly.
Program Outcome
- Train and accredit gerontology professionals
- Train, accredit and recycle professionals in Clinical gerontology through the proper qualification.
- Train, accredit and recycle professionals in social gerontology through the proper qualification.
- Facilitate the incorporation of professionals into the field of gerontological research, both in public and private organizations or companies.
- Promote the international exchange of students and teachers in order to broaden their gerontological perspective
- Train research personnel who are in a position to begin their doctoral thesis.
Curriculum
The Interuniversity Master in Xerontoloxia (MIG) consists of 60 ECTS credits, which are taken over the course of an academic year divided into two semesters and three modules:
- MODULE I. It will include the common compulsory subjects and will be taught during the first quarter of the academic year.
- MODULE II. It will include optional subjects by specialty
- MODULE III. It will include optional subjects
The Interuniversity Master in Gerontology (MIG) consists of 60 ECTS credits, which are taken throughout an academic year divided into two semesters and three modules:
- MODULE I. It will include the common compulsory subjects and will be developed during the first quarter of the academic year
- MODULE II. It will include elective subjects by specialty
- MODULE III. It will include optional subjects
The structure of each module is detailed below:
MODULE I
The first module, compulsory and common, is taken in the first semester of the first year and consists of six common subjects with the same descriptors and contents:
- Demography of Aging (4 ECTS)
- Assessment in Gerontology (4 ECTS)
- Intervention in Gerontology (4 ECTS)
- Social Gerontology I (4 ECTS)
- Clinical Gerontology I (4 ECTS)
- Research Methodology in Gerontology (4 ECTS)
In the first semester of the first year, in addition to taking these 24 mandatory ECTS, another 6 ECTS will be taken corresponding to the elective included in module III and offered by either of the two universities.
MODULE II
The second module, of an optional nature, and with an offer depending on the chosen specialty, will be taken in the second semester and consists of two subjects, as well as the TFM and the External Practices (Practicum), all specific to each specialty:
Specialty: Social Gerontology-USC
- Clinical Gerontology II (4 ECTS)
- Pathology and Geriatric Intervention (4 ECTS)
- TFM (8 ECTS)
- Clinical Specialty External Practices (Practicum) (8 ECTS)
Specialty: Social Gerontology-USC
- Social Gerontology II (4 ECTS)
- Socio-health care (4 ECTS)
- TFM (8 ECTS)
- External Practices Social Specialty (Practicum) (8 ECTS)
Once enrolled, the student must choose the specialty to take in the second semester of the first year, and in addition to taking the 24 mandatory ECTS for each specialty, another 6 ECTS will be taken corresponding to the electives included in module III and taught by either of the two Universities.
MODULE III
The third module includes the electives to be offered during the academic year (first and second semester), encompassing all the elective subjects offered by both universities, from which the student will have to choose those to take. Students will have to select from the offer, 6 ECTS for each of the quarters of the annuity. In this way you will complete the total credits per semester (30 ECTS):
University of Coruña. It will offer 5 subjects of 3 ECTS each:
- New technologies, support products and accessible environment (3 ECTS)
- English (3 ECTS)
- The research project in Gerontology (3 ECTS)
- Clinical Psychology (3 ECTS)
- Non-pharmacological intervention in dementia (3 ECTS)
University of Santiago de Compostela. It will offer 5 subjects of 3 ECTS each:
- Gerontological Direction and Management (3 ECTS)
- Biology of Aging (3 ECTS)
- Gerontological Law and Civil Liability (3 ECTS)
- Gerontological Economics (3 ECTS)
- Sociopedagogical Intervention in Gerontology (3 ECTS)
Note that the student may select elective subjects from among those offered by each of the universities, regardless of the selected specialty.
In addition, the mandatory subjects of the other specialty will be considered electives of one specialty. Thus, for example, the subjects Clinical Gerontology II and Geriatric Pathology and Intervention will be optional for the social specialty; while the subjects Social Gerontology II and Social Health Care will be optional for the clinical specialty.
