Introduction

Doctorate in Mathematics

The Doctoral Program in Mathematics of Aveiro University (DPMat-UA) offers a doctoral course that has as main goal the training of high qualified researchers in Mathematics. This doctoral course is in line with the requirements of Bolonha model adopted by the University of Aveiro. The ongoing Ph.D. research projects of DPMat-UA are distributed by the following specializations:

  • รalgebra and Geometry;
  • Algorithms and Computability;
  • Complex and Hypercomplex Analysis;
  • Functional Analysis and and Applications;
  • Optimization, Graph Theory and Combinatorics;
  • Theory of Control and Calculation of Variations;
  • Mathematical Systems Theory;
  • Probability and Statistics;
  • Gravitational and Dynamic Geometry;

The training offered by DPMat-UA covers different areas, from pure to applied mathematics, and aims the Ph.D. graduation for research activities and for teaching activities in universities, polytechnics schools colleges and also for the development of highly qualified activities in companies. The admission to DPMat-UA follows the rules established by the Portuguese law (namely the requirements of Art. 30th of DL Nยบ 74/2006 of March 24 of 2006). The doctoral program after the last remodeling carried out in 2020 now offers two alternative specializations that aim to give a specificity to the training recognized by the UA.

Mathematical-Physics branch: Based on the research group "Gravitational and Dynamic Geometry Group" of CIDMA, this specialization aims to provide a recognized training in a brink area between Physics and Mathematics. It is primarily aimed at maths students with some background in physics (a master's in physics for example) or physics students with a strong maths knowledge.
