Introduction
Master in Geriatric Nutrition
The purpose of this Master's program is to cover a training gap, Geriatric Nutrition, which is so specialized, in an environment in which the aging of the population justifies the demand for qualified professionals capable of specifically meeting the nutritional requirements of the group. For these reasons, it is considered that this training proposal will be especially attractive for many Dietitians-Nutritionists and for professionals, Doctors specializing in Geriatrics, who carry out their care, training and / or research work in the field of nursing homes and / or geriatric centers.
The geriatric community is one of the most vulnerable groups from a nutritional point of view. The special requirements of this group justify the need to train duly qualified professionals, capable of responding to specific problems. In this sense, nutrition is one of the basic pillars on which active and healthy aging is based. It is clear that maintaining healthy lifestyles throughout life, eating a balanced diet, and engaging in moderate physical activity helps reduce the risk of chronic non-communicable diseases and improve physical and mental faculties. Continuing these good habits into old age helps preserve cognitive function, delay dependency, and reverse frailty.
It must be borne in mind that the approach to nutritional problems and malnutrition in the elderly is very complex, since it is necessary to consider the interaction between the progressive decline of the physiological systems typical of aging and some chronic diseases and conditions. Proper nutrition is a key element, but feeding the elderly correctly is a sometimes difficult goal to achieve. In most cases it is necessary to individualize the diet according to specific requirements, which implies using certain supplements and special dietary products to adapt the diet to the profile of each patient.
