English Preparatory Program

This academic English preparatory program is designed to prepare international students whose native language is not English for studying in English-language programs at the university level.

The goals of the program are to help students develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence that they will need to successfully complete a degree using English in a variety of academic fields. Students in the program will build on their existing English abilities, learning more about how to use English as a tool for studying at the university level.

This program will consist of 20 hours of instruction per week for 2 semesters, focusing on six skill areas: reading, listening, writing, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary. In each of the areas, emphasis will be placed on helping students develop a set of skills and a body of knowledge about English, which will be crucial for using English successfully to achieve their academic goals. In reading and listening classes, emphasis will be placed on comprehending the complex readings and lectures found in university-level courses and on understanding the structure of these texts. In writing and speaking classes, students will learn how to structure academic papers, how to give presentations, and how to work together in seminar groups using English. Finally, throughout the program, students will have the opportunity to expand their grammar and vocabulary knowledge, accuracy, and range.
