This interdisciplinary study programme offers comprehensive training in the English language, literature, and cultures of Anglophone countries. Students develop advanced language proficiency (B2–C1 CEFR), gain knowledge in linguistics, literary history, and literary interpretation, and explore the relationship between language, culture, and society.
Graduates are prepared for careers in cultural institutions, publishing, media, tourism, public administration, or further academic study. The programme equips students with the skills and competencies needed for successful professional and civic engagement in a globalised world.
At the University of Prešov, outstanding academic performance is rewarded through a merit-based scholarship system. Up to 10% of full-time Bachelor's and Master's degree students may receive a motivational scholarship every semester, based on previous exceptional academic achievements.
Additionally, students may apply for motivational scholarships for extraordinary achievements in sports, arts, or research. These opportunities aim to support and recognise students who not only excel academically but also contribute to university life through talent and innovation.
The curriculum includes translation and interpreting basics, intercultural communication, and the study of contemporary sociocultural realities across English-speaking countries. The bachelor´s degree in English Language and Anglophone Cultures is a three-year program (180 ECTS)
Acquired Knowledge
Graduates of the bachelor's study program possess factual, conceptual, and procedural knowledge across all areas of study, with a focus on their application in accordance with the current state. They acquire synthetic knowledge of the language system and its functioning on all linguistic levels, including in relation to other languages, their native language included.
Graduates have a well-structured understanding of literary theory, literary history, and the interpretation of literary texts. They are familiar with the histories of Anglophone countries and possess knowledge of their cultures and sociocultural realities, which they are able to compare and contrast with those of their native country.
They also acquire systematic theoretical and methodological knowledge in the field of translation and interpreting studies, including an understanding of current developments. Furthermore, they are familiar with the relations between language and culture and master the basic concepts of intercultural communication.
Acquired Skills
Graduates are able to produce stylistically appropriate texts across a variety of genres. They are skilled in information retrieval and its application to the resolution of practical tasks using suitable procedures and methods. They are trained in the complex linguistic analysis of discourse and the literary analysis and interpretation of artistic texts.
They master the basic procedures, skills, and strategies of translation and interpreting. Their oral and written communication skills in English are fully developed at the B2–C1 level according to the CEFR. They can utilise information technologies for the creation and revision of texts.
Acquired Competencies
Graduates are capable of applying their linguistic, literary, translation, interpreting, and cultural knowledge and skills in both receptive and productive modes of communication, as well as in the critical reflection of communicative practices. They possess basic intercultural competence—that is, the ability to communicate effectively across cultures by understanding diverse cultural frameworks and their contribution to global cultural diversity.
Graduates can identify and articulate cultural specifics and culturally conditioned behaviours of people from other cultures. They are capable of creatively solving both individual and team-based academic or professional tasks and of presenting and defending their outcomes, arguments. The knowledge and skills acquired during the program are applicable both in their professional careers and in their active civic life within a democratic society.
Graduates are capable of independently managing their studies, reflecting on current developments in the relevant fields, and are fully competent to pursue further education at the master’s level in the same or a related discipline. They are prepared to broaden their expertise through individual and independent learning.
