Bachelor in Ocean Sciences

The cycle of studies in Ocean Sciences aims to promote comprehensive and multidisciplinary training in the fundamental areas related to the study of the physical and biogeochemical processes of the major oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Antarctic).

The programme provides students with a solid scientific foundation to understand the interactions within various oceanic ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of their conservation. Students will develop practical skills through subjects such as Ocean Methods and Technologies, Dynamics of Living Resources, and Physical Oceanography, which will include activities at sea and in laboratories.

This course will also address significant international themes, such as the blue economy and maritime spatial planning, highlighting global concerns with sustainability and the responsible management of ocean resources.

The general objectives include:

• Providing robust training for action in areas like the management and conservation of oceans;
• Equipping students with fundamental knowledge in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Statistics;
• Preparing students for further studies at advanced levels (2nd and 3rd cycles) in Ocean Sciences.

Objectives

The main knowledge, skills, and competencies expected to be achieved in this cycle of studies include:

• Theoretical and Practical Mastery: In-depth understanding of the major oceans and their ecosystems, with training in advanced field and laboratory analysis methods;
• Data Analysis: Skills in data collection and interpretation using statistical tools and geographic information systems;
• Sustainable Management: Capability for the management and conservation of ocean resources;
• Research and Innovation: Ability to conduct research projects, promote innovative methodologies, and carry out original research;
• Scientific Communication: Proficiency in communicating ideas and results to specialized and non-specialized audiences clearly and effectively; and
• Environmental Awareness: Development of a critical awareness of contemporary environmental issues.

Additionally, since the course is taught in English, it offers graduates a competitive advantage compared to other degrees in Portugal. The English-language training facilitates access to international scientific literature and improves employability, enabling easier integration into global contexts and international research projects.
