About: Thiel College combines a liberal-arts foundation with applied training to prepare you for the actuarial profession or advanced study in actuarial science. You'll get math and business coursework, hands-on assignments, service learning and internships. Major skills include applying calculus methods (limits, differentiation, integration), probability and statistics for complex problems, vector algebra and vector calculus, constructing logical proofs, and understanding the power and limits of calculators and computers.
Career Outcomes: Graduates can pursue roles as an actuary, actuarial analyst, risk analyst, data analyst, financial analyst, or actuarial consultant, or continue to graduate study in actuarial science or related quantitative fields.
The continuing growth of insurance and governmental agencies has maintained a constant demand for qualified actuaries. You will graduate with the mathematical training and business background needed to enter the actuarial profession directly.
Also, students who graduate with a degree in actuarial studies will be prepared for advanced study in actuarial science at a university.
Major Features
- Understand and be able to apply the three basic concepts from calculus: limits, differentiation, and integration.
- Have a strong understanding of probability and statistics and be able to apply statistical methods to complex problems.
- Understand and be able to apply the basic concepts of vector algebra and vector calculus.
- Be able to construct logical proofs.
- Understand the power and limitations of technologies (e.g., calculators and computers) as problem-solving tools.
A student who graduates from Thiel College with a major in actuarial studies will be able to:
- Use general probability theory to solve problems in the field of financial risk management;
- Apply interest theory to calculate the values of and payments for various financial instruments;
- Use derivatives to create and evaluate financial positions, especially those involving insurance;
- Use statistical methods to make decisions and analyze situations;
- Communicate statistical and financial information effectively, in both oral and written formats.
Major Requirements
In addition to taking one of the first two SOA exams (P or FM), a student majoring in actuarial studies must successfully complete the following courses. All courses applied to the major must be completed with a grade of C minus or higher.
