Program Overview

The Optical Science and Engineering master’s of science degree is an interdisciplinary study of the behavior and properties of light for careers in the areas of micro-optics and nanophotonics, fiber and integrated optics, optoelectronic materials and devices, biomedical optics, optical interferometry and metrology, optical fabrication, nanoscale imaging and spectroscopy, adaptive optics, optical communication, novel light-matter interactions, quantum optics and optical sensors and measurements.The purpose of the program is to educate scientists and engineers who will develop the next generation of optical technology.

M.S. in Optical Science and Engineering at a Glance

The Master of Science in Optical Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary study of the behavior and properties of light. Study spans UNC Charlotte’s five science and engineering departments and two centers: the Departments of Physics and Optical Science, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science, the Center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications and the Center for Precision Metrology.
